Tyler Colvin remains hospitalized in Miami as he recovers from a frightening freak accident that occurred as he was running the bases in the Chicago Cubs’ game Sunday against the Florida Marlins.
Colvin, the Cubs’ baserunner at third, was struck by a piece of shattered bat (“impaled” seems like too strong a term; “stabbed” is more accurate) as he scored. He is in stable condition with a tube in his chest to prevent a collapsed lung and will not play again this season. “It’s one of those things that’s scary,” Chicago Cubs Manager Dusty Baker said. “That’s the danger of a maple bat. Thank goodness he’s okay.”
Here’s a better look at the play:
Will the Vikings get Vincent Jackson?
In Minnesota, there’s a giant, imaginary Vincent Jackson clock and it’s ticking down to the 4 p.m. EDT deadline for trading the San Diego Chargers wide receiver.
A certain unretired quarterback who threw three interceptions Sunday and goes by the name of Brett Farve (and, on the internets and the Twitters, Brett Farve) could use another pass catcher. ESPN reports that the Vikings are expected to make a serious run at Jackson.
Know another team that could use a wide receiver like Jackson? The Washington Redskins, that’s who.
Vick makes a statement, but for this year or next?
Mike Vick’s big game Sunday may have had more to do with next season than with who will start Sunday (Andy Reid says it will be Kevin Kolb). SI’s Peter King writes of Vick, whose contract with Philly is up after this season:
Is Vick different? Is he going to be someone’s long-term option a year from now? Watching him over the last six quarters, I think he has a real chance now.
“I know Kevin can do it,” Vick said. “I saw him do it all summer. For me, I’ve had a taste of it now, and now, finally, I know it’s going to be there for me. If I have to wait another year, I can. I can be patient.”
The salary cap…if there were one
