Colts vs. Giants in 2010 was not the story of the Manning brothers battling for each other for a victory. It was the story of Peyton Manning destroying the Giants defense.

Both the Giants offense and defense, according to SB Nation’s Big Blue View, didn’t know what hit them on Sunday night against the Colts.

I hate to sound like Jeremy Shockey, but the Giants absolutely did not look ready to play Sunday night. It’s as disturbed as I’ve ever been watching a Tom Coughlin team. In a game I thought set up well to give the Giants a chance at what would have been an upset, it was obvious from the opening drive that they had no chance. A lot of that is on TC, who you guys know I believe is a terrific coach. I have no idea what the Giants were thinking, or trying to accomplish, Sunday night.

Peyton Manning had no trouble finding receivers against the Giants. He completed 20-of-26 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns. His precision helped the Giants get up to a 24-0 lead in the first half.

But, who would have thought New York would be this year’s Tornado Alley?

Yes, tornadoes, as in the storm that picked up twelve year-old Dorothy Gale and transported her and some dog named Toto to a strange village. But, wait, that was rural Kansas, where tornadoes are supposed to happen. New Yorkers only expect to see them on Broadway sets while people are singing and dancing.

Wrong.

On Friday, New York was trying to clean up the mess after a wind storm roared through Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, blowing off roofs, downing trees, knocking out power lines, and causing one fatality. Although it’s not clear yet whether it was an actual tornado, meteorologists found one part of the deadly storm with 109 mile per hour winds.

Earlier this summer, on July 25th, a tornado roared through the Bronx, causing damage and injuring people.

“It’s a myth that cities cannot be hit with tornadoes and damaging winds,” says Henry Margusity, senior meteorologist and severe weather expert at AccuWeather.com in State College, Pa. “So far this year, New York has been hit more than the Midwest cities.”

Mr. Margusity says tornadoes, which are complex weather events, are formed when a thunderstorm starts to rotate, then gets hit with wind sheer in the atmosphere and picks up energy from the jet stream. If the humidity is right and the temperature is right, the thunderstorm structure starts to spin all the way down to the surface.

All those elements converged Thursday when a storm system that had caused tornadoes in Kansas and Ohio accelerated into the east. It picked up humidity that was funneling up through New Jersey. At the same time, a cold front was racing towards New York, providing energy. Add in a jet stream that was ripping over New York in the upper atmosphere.

“All the ingredients came together all at once,” says Margusity who notes this year there have been severe wind storms and tornadoes from Washington to Boston.

Even the skyscrapers in a city won’t make any difference to a tornado once the system starts spinning, says Margusity. “There could be some disruption of the tornado going through the city, but bear in mind a tornado can be a mile wide and the thunderstorm can go up 40,000 feet into the atmosphere, so the buildings are small in magnitude compared to the weather,” he says. “The wind can be funneled around buildings and it becomes even faster.”

New York and other cities may have been hit with tornadoes in the past, but weathermen did not have the technology to see them, Margusity says. “Now with all this new radar technology, we’re seeing things that we couldn’t see 20 years ago.”

In fact, he expects the new “storm chasers” will be urbanites hanging out their apartment windows with cell phones taking photos of the tornadoes.

“We will watch it on the internet from the time it develops until the time it hits,” he says. “It will become a regular part of our day like car chases in California.”

Somewhere beneath the sophomoric jokes about Mexican sportscaster Ines Sainz and her run-in with the New York Jets this past weekend is a serious story about the tricky role performed by female reporters who cover male-dominated athletics. Unfortunately, Rush Limbaugh, who had a brief, controversial stint as a sports commentator himself, missed an opportunity to address it when he discussed the topic on his radio show today. According to USA Today, Limbaugh said of Sainz: “…Boob-alicious, booty-licious, whatever you want to call it, she’s got it.” He added that the Jets team, who were apparently trying to run very close to Sainz while fielding practice passes, “was celebrating her body.”

Limbaugh was more thoughtful with his comments the day before. Speaking of the alleged harassment of Sainz by the Jets players, Limbaugh said: “That’s not the way it’s supposed to be in 2010. A woman doing her job, a former Miss Spain working for TV Azteca in town to do an interview with the starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez, is supposed to be able to go in there and do her job without being put upon like somebody walking into a bar.” If only Limbaugh would have been that clear-headed during his brief career as an NFL commentator, he might still be calling games.

Rex Ryan said Tuesday that he has offered to talk to the NFL about the investigation into whether Jets players and possibly coaches acted inappropriately toward TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz at a Saturday practice at the team’s facility in Florham Park.

“I volunteered to talk to them,” Ryan said at a press conference to discuss the Jets’ 10-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens Monday night. “We want to have an environment here where everybody’s comfortable. I don’t know all the specifics of what’s going on. The NFL is here today. They’re here investigating. We’re open. Whoever the NFL wants to talk to – I’m not sure who it is – but we’ll let that play out. We’re here to cooperate.”

Ryan also said the team is open to sensitivity training. “It’s something as an organization we’re going to look into,” he said. “Bring people in that maybe will help, provide that kind of environment. We’re certainly open to that.”

Ryan said the NFL had not yet spoken with him about the incident, which has sparked a national debate on the issue of women reporters in the locker room., adding that he is not sure if the team will be fined 

Sainz went to the Jets’ practice Saturday to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez, but while waiting for Sanchez, she was blitzed with boorish behavior. Players and coaches seemed to intentionally overthrow passes in her direction, whistled at her, openly ogled her and blocked her path as she attempted to walk away. In the locker room,  she was subjected to whistles and catcalls, eventually tweeting that she was avoiding eye contact with players.

Ryan said Tuesday that he has not had spoken to Sainz. 

“I really don’t know what happened, what took place,”  Ryan said. “If anything I’m finding out as well. I was trying to get ready for a game. This came up. I wasn’t in the lockerroom.” 

He said league officials will talk to specific players today.

“Everybody should be comfortable,” Ryan said. “That’s who we are. We’re an open team. Probably as open as anybody. We try to provide access to all our players, to all our coaches… Every reporter should be comfortable. It’s workplace for every reporter here as well as the players. All of us here.”

All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets reached an agreement on a new contract, ending a seven-month impasse one week before the team’s season-opening game.

Revis, 25, sat out training camp and the preseason while seeking a deal that could make him the highest-paid cornerback in the National Football League. Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum confirmed the agreement during a conference call without disclosing contract details.

The New York Daily News said that Revis and the Jets came to terms on a four-year contract worth $ 46 million, including $ 32 million in guaranteed money.

“I’m sorry for this process and I can’t wait to get back on the field,” Revis said in a posting on his Twitter social networking account.

The breakthrough came after Jets coach Rex Ryan traveled to Florida over the weekend to meet with Revis and a week before the team hosts the Baltimore Ravens to open the regular season on Sept. 13. Ryan said last month that Revis would probably play Week 1 even if he didn’t rejoin the Jets until the day before the opener.

Revis had six interceptions last season while anchoring a Jets defense that made it to the American Football Conference title game allowing a league-low 252.3 yards a week.

Revis also led the league with 37 passes defended and finished second to Green Bay Packers cornerback Charles Woodson in voting for the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Award.

He was set to make $ 1 million in base pay this season in the fourth year of a six-year contract worth a total of $ 36 million. Revis asked for $ 162 million over 10 years, while the Jets offered $ 122 million for the same period, ESPN said.

Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders is the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback in terms of average value, with a three-year, $ 45.3 million contract.

The Jets and Revis’s representatives agreed last month to keep negotiations confidential after the two sides traded barbs in the media over their lack of progress.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Texas Rangers acquired Jeff Francoeur, a right-handed bat that has hit pretty well against left-handed pitching, from the New York Mets in exchange for infielder Joaquin Arias on Tuesday.

Mets assistant GM John Ricco said the Mets would not be shedding any salary in the deal. Meaning they would be responsible for the prorated remainder of Francoeur’s million salary, and Arias’ salary would be paid by Texas.

“Obviously they see that I don’t fit in the plans next year here,” Francoeur said. “We all saw that coming the last two, three weeks especially. They’re giving me an opportunity and taking care of me. And to that I could forever be grateful for.”

Since the deal was completed before the midnight ET deadline, Francoeur would be eligible for the postseason roster. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Rangers designated Brandon Boggs for assignment.

“This is going to be obviously a good opportunity for me to go play obviously against some lefties and go to the playoffs,” Francoeur said.

The Rangers have been searching for a right-handed bat to help them against tough lefties and Francoeur has hit .278 (in 97 at-bats) against left-handed pitching this season with three homers and 12 RBIs.

“He’s another right-handed bat that we can get in the lineup against lefties,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said. “We needed another right-handed bat and he’ll give us that so that we don’t have to keep sending up left-handed bats against the lefties. And he’s a guy we know will drive in runs.”

Francoeur, 26, has struggled recently. He is hitting .229 in August and batted just .132 in July. Before Tuesday’s game, Francoeur had hit safely in his last five games and was 8-for-19 (.421) in that span.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” Francoeur said. “… Going into the year I didn’t envision the year going the way it did for me personally and for the team. But, at the same time, I feel I came out to play hard every day. Sometimes, yeah, it wasn’t the best and I sure get frustrated.”

Texas is 3-8 against its last 11 left-handed starters. And some of the right-handed bats acquired to play against those lefties haven’t produced. But what’s interesting is that David Murphy has hit lefties well — .290 against them. So Washington will have to figure out when best to use Francoeur in the lineup and make sure Murphy gets his at-bats.

“It gives Ron more options against the tough left-handers we’ve been facing,” general manager Thad Levine said. “We’re looking at the composition of our 25-man roster, specifically our outfield, and it’s relatively left-handed and gives us an opportunity to pick our spots and platoon with guys like Murphy and [Julio] Borbon.”

As a team, the Rangers are hitting .264 against lefties, which is fifth in the AL. But playoff contenders Minnesota and New York are ahead of them. Texas faced five straight left-handed starters to end the last homestand and went 2-3. Oakland threw three straight lefties against the Rangers and Texas won just one of those games.

“I’m looking forward to it. I played with Frenchy in the WBC. He’s a gamer. He always plays hard. He’ll fit in well here,” Rangers third baseman Michael Young said in Kansas City, where Texas lost 10-9 to the Royals.

Francoeur also has some postseason experience, playing for the Braves in 2005. He joins a clubhouse that doesn’t know much about the playoffs since so many of the players are young, homegrown talent and the Rangers haven’t been to the postseason since 1999.

“I remember in ’05 when I came up with the Braves I went to the playoffs. I kind of got spoiled because I thought that’s how it was every year,” Francoeur said. “For me, the last four years I haven’t really been in a pennant race. So to get a chance to go out there and hopefully help out in every way I can and go to the playoffs, that’s going to be a fun opportunity I’m going to relish.”

In addition to trading Francoeur, the Mets announced after a 9-2 loss to the Braves that two players, right-handed pitcher Jenrry Mejia and outfielder Lucas Duda, have been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.

Mejia made 30 relief appearances for the Mets this season, going 0-2 with a 3.25 ERA. Duda hit .304 with 23 homers and 87 RBIs splitting time between Class AA Binghamton and Buffalo.

Arias was obtained by the Rangers in the trade that sent Alex Rodriguez to New York in 2003. He was thought to have great potential, but developed shoulder trouble in 2007 and never really met expectations in Texas. He was called up late in 2008 and hit .291 in 110 at-bats. He played in only three major league games in 2009 and hit .278 with nine RBIs in 98 at-bats in 2010.

With Ian Kinsler on the disabled list and Cristian Guzman struggling, Arias was given some chances at second base. But he had a couple of mental gaffes in Tampa Bay earlier this month and ended up getting designated for assignment last week to make room for Alex Cora.

In the meantime, Andres Blanco emerged as Kinsler’s top substitute. Kinsler is expected to join the team Wednesday and play Friday in Minnesota.
