Joe Torre resigns? – Washington Times

BALTIMORE, Md, September 17^th – Two enigmatic pitchers take the hill tonight, one looking to bolster his case for a postseason rotation spot, and the other wanting to keep his major league career alive. A.J. Burnett is headed for October baseball, sporting a 5.13 ERA, all the while making $ 18 million dollars, but possibly destined to be pitching out of the bullpen. Kevin Millwood is leading the American League in losses, and sports a 5.30 earned runs figure, also good for last in the AL.

But two former Yankees will overshadow that storyline tonight. Already stuck in a nasty ownership struggle, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost their manager today. Managing legend Joe Torre, who led the Yankees to four World Series titles from the dugout, will announce his resignation today, reports Fox News. Hitting legend Don Mattingly, who served as Torre’s bench coach first with the Yankees, then followed him to LA, will take over as the team’s manager.

Torre led the Dodgers to the NLCS in back-to-back seasons, toppling the heavily favored Chicago Cubs in 2008, and defeating a highly touted St. Louis Cardinals team in 2009. Both years, Los Angeles fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in the LCS, but Torre’s reputation remained secure.

His resignation and retirement leaves him with a 2318-1990 win-loss record in 29 years as manager of the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Some sources are reporting that Torre’s resignation may not take effect until the end of the season. That’ll be resolved this evening when the Dodgers take on the Rockies. Until then though, it’s a clear possibility that a living legend may have skippered his final game.

Tonight, in a stadium filled with navy-and-white clad fans, risking their necks in enemy territory, the focus won’t be on the game, even as the Yanks battle for home-field advantage. An era has ended for good. Hank Steinbrenner would like you to think that the Torre era ended three years ago. It never did. Joe Torre was the quiet face of the Yankees in their heyday. Those days are gone, and now Torre finally is, too.

TIRANA, Albania — President Bamir Topi supported a request by Muslims to build a big mosque for the city of Tirana on Thursday (September 9th). “I would not like to see people praying on the pavements or even in the streets. Therefore, I would like to invite everybody to contribute in order for the Muslim community in Tirana to have their mosque,” Topi said during a visit with Muslim community leaders to mark the Bayram holiday. The Muslim community has been complaining for years about the lack a big mosque where they could gather in larger numbers. Tirana already has a big Catholic cathedral, and a Christian Orthodox church is opening soon downtown. (Telegrafi, Top Channel, Shekulli – 09/09/10)

That’s what the “XR” stands for, see: “Extended Range.” (Apparently Roku’s engineers learned programming in the extra time they had on their hands after dropping out of their grade school spelling bees in the first round.)

In a way, though, you could also say the joke’s on your friends, because even though they’ve got a chance to buy today’s Roku media player and pass you in this little keeping-up-with-the-Jonses home entertainment arms race you’ve got going on, it’s still going to cost them an extra Hamilton. That XR feature don’t come for free.

We admit, it’s kind of a confusing situation. But there’s definitely a joke, and it’s definitely on one of you. As to exactly what the joke is, though, and on specifically whom—well, you’ll have to work that out between yourselves. Maybe sometime when you’re not preoccupied with your Ten Years of LAW & ORDER SVU Streaming Marathon.
