Moved to a new place? Planning to redesign your home? Most people think that the only way to have a great space is to hire a decorator. But most experts believe that those who don’t have too much too spend, which essentially include most of us, can still have a great space. How? By understanding a set of few and basic interior design ideas that can help you decide what looks good for your space and what do not. Here are few time-tested and proven interior design ideas that are easy and cheap to execute.

Get and stay organized. Clutter is definitely a NO in any designer’s book of home design ideas. The first rule of home decorating â?? whether you have a gracious or limited space â?? is to keep inch clutter-free. An instant organizing trick: Installing shelves. Consider your space when you are ordering stock cabinetry or shelves; don’t just order cabinets on the basis that you think it looks good for your home. And because cabinetry and shelves are sort of permanent, you want to install it without compromising your ever changing need and tastes when it comes to interior design ideas.

Look at spaces within your cabinets. One of the most important home design ideas I can give is that there are many spaces that a homeowner can actually utilize â?? and that includes the space in your cabinet. The next time that you want to order another cabinet to accommodate your ever growing wardrobe, open the cabinet’s door, and plan to install rod. One-door cabinets can be divided into three parts: Simply install the first rod at head’s height to accommodate long clothing, second rod at waist’s height for shorter items like skirts, blazer, and shirts, and the space below can accommodate house clothes and other items like boots and shoes.

Use your wall as an instant organizing space. Instead of thinking of wall as a boring canvass, we recommend using it as an instant organizing unit.

Re-decorating your kitchen? Your wall can function as an organizing unit for your pans and pots; look out for home décor pictures and plan how you will display your kitchen items using your wall. This idea simply looks flawless when you opt for a country or rustic theme for your home. Or, if your mantel or cabinet is flowing with knick knacks, we recommend hanging mementos and picture frames. There are many ways how you can utilize your wall, so just be creative.

Keep your desk clutter-free. Sure you want to look like I’m-too-busy-to-fix-my-desk type, but a clean and clutter-free desk is essentially the key to productivity. Use in trays for keeping knick knacks and use instant organizers like file boxes and in-out tray. Make your desk work for you; rearrange and rotate things if you need to.

I stumbled across this historical fact while reading Thomas C. Leonard’s 1995 book, News for All: America’s Coming-of-Age With the Press. He writes, “When Americans chose the news, they were often not simply thinking of stories they wished to read; they were thinking of another reader.”

Leonard’s example is the Boston News-Letter, first published in 1704. Its proprietor, John Campbell, deliberately left blank space in its pages so subscribers could annotate and otherwise append their ideas and “news” to the newspaper. These amendments weren’t aimless jottings, either. Newspapers were routinely shared after purchase, and the notes readers added in the spaces and margins were designed to edify the friend or acquaintance the reader next forwarded his paper to.

Nor was Campbell the first to reserve such a space for readers in his pages. In 1696, British publisher Ichabod Dawks left blank space in his pages for readers to supplement the words he printed. The first edition of Dawks’s News Letter, dated Aug. 4, 1696, told readers, “This letter will be done upon good writing-paper, and blank spaces left that any gentleman may write his own private business.” Historian of journalism Frank Mott notes that America’s first newspaper, Publick Occurrences, which printed just one edition in 1690 before being shuttered by the government, also left a blank page* for the comments of readers.

As newspapers evolved, readers found new ways to comment. Leonard reports that later subscribers in Boston paid a premium for wrappers “so they would have a generous writing space as they sent the paper along.” In the 1800s, as pioneers moved West, the mailed newspaper became “a natural greeting card,” as Leonard puts it, that allowed friends and family back home to know that the traveler had arrived at his destination. Friendships and courtships were advanced by the exchange of newspapers, much as friends and lovers trade URLs via e-mail today. By forwarding a newspaper—or a URL—the sender validates the information transferred. But usually, the information being transferred is dwarfed by the sender’s expression that he is just thinking of the recipient.

In Knowledge Is Power: The Diffusion of Information in Early America, 1700-1865, Richard D. Brown describes another proto-Web means of news transmission. In late-18th-century Boston, ship captains, merchants, traders, and others would gather at the coffeehouse to trade word of mouth and partake of the newspapers purchased by the proprietor. They would also consult the books maintained by the coffee shop, whose blank pages they would fill with their “news and opinions daily.” The way Brown describes them, these pages sound like today’s comments sections (except they obviously didn’t require writers to register their e-mail addresses or Facebook IDs).

In my plunge into the prehistory of comments sections, I’ve yet to find evidence of the first flame war or of the first banned commenter. But as I dig deeper, I’m sure I will. Nobody can respond to the news for long without knocking somebody’s nose out of joint, right?

******

I used to get a slew of e-mail from readers. Then, in February, Slate added a new in-page comments system that allows readers to post their comments directly below Slate pieces. (Previously, readers could post only to our “Fray” section, which you have to click to read.) Now, instead of sharing their cheeky comments with just me, readers are doing that coffee shop thing and sharing them with one another. That leaves me feeling lonely. Bring back the good old days: Send e-mail to . Or at the very least sign up for my Twitter feed. (E-mail may be quoted by name in “The Fray,” Slate‘s readers’ forum; in a future article; or elsewhere unless the writer stipulates otherwise. Permanent disclosure: Slate is owned by the Washington Post Co.)

Track my errors: This hand-built RSS feed will ring every time Slate runs a “Press Box” correction. For e-mail notification of errors in this specific column, type the word Publick in the subject head of an e-mail message, and send it to .

Correction, Aug. 27, 2010: This article originally stated that there were multiple blank pages in the first and only edition of Publick Occurrences. There was only one blank page. (Return to the corrected sentence.)

'Madame Butterfly'

Kelly Kaduce's radiant Cio-Cio San was first heard in Opera Theatre of St. Louis' 2008 production of Giacomo Puccini's "Madame Butterfly." This season, she revisited the role at the Santa Fe Opera, seen in performance Aug. 2.

Kaduce is the complete package: a soprano with an exquisite voice and fine technique, a beauty who moves well, an actress of both depth and understanding who completely inhabits her roles. Her Butterfly was a creature of both grace and some American-style spunkiness; her singing filled the house with a full, silvery tone.

Most of the other principals were OTSL veterans as well. The callow and caddish Lt. Pinkerton was the fine tenor Brandon Jovanovich, heard here in leading roles "Flight," "Gloriana" and "Anna Karenina." His voice has continued to grow and darken, and Puccini is a good fit for him. He acts as well as he sings; he and Kaduce had terrific chemistry, and their Act I love duet was a highlight of the evening.

The usually reliable baritone James Westman was not at his best as the American consul Sharpless. He was often hard to hear (although much of that was the fault of the conductor, Antony Walker, who tended to crank the volume and rush the tempos), and Westman's characterization was uncommonly unsympathetic.

Mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong displayed a rich voice and maternal concern as Butterfly's servant Suzuki, and tenor Keith Jameson was appropriately slimy as the marriage broker Goro.

The production was drab and grim, but its vocal strengths made up for most of its other shortcomings. The worst of the latter was the badly conceived and poorly timed conclusion, which featured Butterfly's child waving around his mother's bloody dagger for a moment of entirely inappropriate suspense.

'Tales of Hoffmann'

A misanthropic director got in the way of good music-making in Christopher Alden's production of Jacques Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann" at Santa Fe Opera, seen Aug. 3.

Offenbach's final cluttered, confusing work, "Hoffmann" was never finished; other versions abound. Santa Fe's edition is by Michael Kaye and Jean-Christophe Keck; it leaves out the Diamond Aria and still manages to be too long.

In this production, it all takes place in Luther's beer cellar, handsome and authentically rendered by scenic designer Allen Moyer, an Opera Theatre of St. Louis regular. It is filled with German students of martial inclinations and, occasionally, with women in a state of mid-19th century undress.

As the Muse/Nicklausse, OTSL veteran Kate Lindsey sang with gorgeous tone and acted superbly. She needed all the considerable athleticism at her command in this production, as did the intelligent, capable tenor David Cangelosi as the four servants. This "Hoffmann" was a nonstop writhe-o-rama for both of them, with no particular dramatic impetus to drive their constant floor exercises.

Much of Alden's direction constituted inexcusable singer abuse. He used some of his principals, including the excellent mezzo Jill Grove (Antonia's Mother) and tenor Mark Schowalter (Spalanzani), as supernumeraries throughout the long evening. Grove had to sit still onstage, draped in black, for a half-hour before actually getting to sing her brief role; it's a testimony to her artistry that she sang it beautifully.

Baritone Wayne Tigges, originally cast as the Vicar in "Albert Herring," took over the role of the four villains on short notice and did a superb job, singing with a dark, hefty tone and radiating villainy.

Tenor Paul Groves — who was also required to sit around onstage when he could have been resting for this long and difficult role — was the Hoffmann. His acting was convincingly drunk and druggy, and his voice's middle range retains his beauty, but his high notes were frequently strained. Casting one soprano as all four of Hoffmann's loves makes dramatic sense, but it's vocally difficult. Erin Wall sang strongly as Antonia, but had some problems in the coloratura role of Olympia; she unwisely took some optional high notes that would have been better left alone.

OTSL music director Stephen Lord, in his Santa Fe Opera debut, maintained a fine balance between orchestra and singers and kept the tempos moving in good order.

Alden's staging was confusing, but he subverted the ending unenigmatically: While the Muse sang to Hoffmann of his deathless work, the villain wrested Hoffmann's notebook from her, distributed its contents to the singer-supernumeraries, and together they burned them. So much for art.

'Albert Herring'

The operas of Benjamin Britten have as an essential theme the plight of the outsider in an intolerant world. That means that they tend toward tragedy in "Peter Grimes" and "Billy Budd" — and then there's "Albert Herring," a hugely funny comedy. Set in a village in turn-of-the-last-century England, it's the tale of a meek young man who manages to break free.

The formidable Lady Billows, self-appointed village ruler, has decided to revive the custom of choosing a Queen of the May and has appointed a committee — the vicar, mayor, head schoolteacher, police superintendent and her own tireless housekeeper — to select a candidate.

In the absence of chaste village maidens, meek Albert is selected to be the first-ever King of the May. With the help of some surreptitiously administered rum and the prize money, he finds the nerve to shatter his mousy persona and step out.

Seen Aug. 4, "Albert Herring" was the season's hit, with a first-rate cast headed by two singers who got their start at Opera Theatre of St. Louis: soprano Christine Brewer, as the autocratic Lady Billows, and tenor Alek Shrader, in the title role.

Brewer usually performs in tragedies, but she's a wonderful comedian, conveying worlds with a single raised eyebrow and singing with her usual lyricism. Shrader made a masterful transition from target to self-confident young man.

They headed a (mostly) first-rate ensemble, each singer a distinct character: mezzo-soprano Jill Grove (a deluxe casting choice), soprano Celena Shafer, baritone Jonathan Michie, tenor Mark Schowalter and baritone Dale Travis, baritone Joshua Hopkins, and mezzos Kate Lindsey and Judith Christin. Sir Andrew Davis led with perfect balance and understanding of the score.

Director Paul Curran is talented, but doesn't seem to have much interest in cultural contexts. By updating the opera to 1947, after two world wars that each devastated Europe, Albert's innocence was rendered improbable, while many references in the libretto became anachronistic. That didn't stop it from being a cracking good evening in the theater.

'Magic Flute '

Mozart's "The Magic Flute," seen Aug. 5 in a revival, has a benign mixture of costuming styles — Elizabethan ladies, small Buddhist monks, gentlemen of the Enlightenment, fascist goons, cutoffs and T-shirts — set against a pair of plain curved walls, all designed by Tobias Hoheisel.

The singing, too, was generally benign: not great, not offensive. The exceptions to that were the excellent baritone Joshua Hopkins, as a Papageno with a down-home accent and Forrest Gump looks, and the terrible bass Andrea Silvestrelli as an unacceptably buzz-toned Sarastro.

The romantic leads, tenor Charles Castranovo (as Tamino) and soprano Ekaterina Siurina (as Pamina), looked great but both seemed a bit heavy-voiced for Mozart. Erin Morley's Queen of the Night aced her two killer arias. Tim Albery's direction was fine, although the trials by fire and water, always a trial for producers, were pretty lame. Conductor Lawrence Renes' tempos leaned toward the slow side.

'Life is a Dream'

Lewis Spratlan's "Life is a Dream," seen Aug. 6, was written in 1975 for an opera company that went under; it was not produced. In 1999, the composer, a professor at Amherst, arranged for a performance of the second act; to widespread surprise, it won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2000. This summer, it made it to the stage.

The story is by the great Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681). King Basilio, concerned by horoscopes that indicate his son Segismundo will be a wild and vicious ruler, sends the infant to be raised in the wilderness. After the grown prince is discovered by a pair of travelers, the king decides to give him a chance. He's drugged and brought to the palace, but told that he is only dreaming.

Segismundo behaves badly, murdering a servant and attempting rape, and his father exiles him again. But the people, who want their "natural prince" to rule them, stage an uprising. The prince spares his father's life and signs on with the prevailing social order, not sure if it's all real or not.

"Dream" is a difficult opera for audience and performers, an aurally (and, I suspect, vocally) painful exercise in pointlessly ugly serialism, with a thick orchestration that frequently forces the singers to push in order to be heard; Spratlan doesn't appear to understand the basics of vocal writing. Act II has the best music of the evening, with some lyrical moments for the soprano. Act I at least does a good job of communicating rage and frustration; Act III largely recapitulates Act I.

Former St. Louis Symphony Orchestra music director Leonard Slatkin, in his Santa Fe Opera debut, held it all together and made the best possible case for the score. He was assisted in that by the able, hardworking cast.

Particularly notable were soprano Ellie Dehn (Cressida in Opera Theatre of St. Louis' 2008 production of Walton's "Troilus and Cressida"), tenor Keith Jameson (Clarin), and baritones James Maddalena (Clotaldo) and Craig Verm (Astolfo).

Tenor Roger Honeywell (Troilus at OTSL) was a buff, handsome Segismundo, but he pushed himself to the point of screaming, and his voice sounded dangerously frayed by the evening's end. The smaller roles were all well done.

Scenic designer David Korins provided a steampunk diving bell that works as Segismundo's prison and his father's throne, with lighted bars providing a shifting forest in the wilderness. Director Kevin Newbury provided clarity in his staging.

A living room is a room where we spend most of our time, whether it is while entertaining guests, or while having a cozy family night. So it can easily be considered as the center of any home. Hence you have to take a little extra effort in living room decorating to create a warm, cozy, chic and inviting effect. For most of us, coming up with living room decorating ideas can be challenging, especially since we do not want to burn a hole in our pockets. But with a little bit of planning, you can come up with living room decorating ideas on a budget.
You do not have to be an interior designer for coming up with decorating ideas for a living room. Decorating a living room can be a lot of fun. All you need is a little creativity and patience to come up with a living room design that will suit your style and home. There are tons of living room decorating ideas which will not only look elegant and beautiful, but will also fit in your budget. One of the most easiest living room decorating ideas on a budget is, to spruce up the look of the living room by painting your living room. Color is a very effective way of setting a mood in the room. Living room color schemes should be a reflection of your style and personality. It is also one of the most inexpensive ways of decorating or redecorating a room. If you want one wall to be a focal point of the room, then you can paint that wall in a color that stands out, like red or green. Then try and use accents of that color in the furniture or knick knacks. When you are on a budget you can not afford to get new furniture, so instead, one of the best options for living room decorating ideas is, to keep one focal point that is one piece of furniture, a bay window, or fireplace as the center and arrange all the other furniture in such a way that it accentuates the beauty of the focal point. This is also one of the classic living room decorating ideas for a fireplace. Keeping one focal point will not only be a great way to save that hard earned money, but it will also look in sync with the living room design. Read more on living room interior design ideas. While coming up with living room designs and ideas, one should remember that it is not only the furniture that makes an impact, but also the knick knacks that can turn a room from drab to fab! For example, using different shapes and designs of mirrors is one of the most creative living room decorating ideas,as it not only reflects a great view, or an interesting architectural element in the room, but also creates an illusion of more space because of the light reflecting off it. Another option is to use area rugs rather than using carpets which are a great way to define a conversation area, but which also do not burn a hole in your pocket. Also, if your coffee table is looking a little scratched or tired, instead of buying a new one, try and use small decorative covers, or even consider tiling the top of the table with mosaic tiles or colored glass. These were just a few living room decorating ideas which will not only look great, but also will not affect your budget. For inspiration for living room decorating ideas and pictures, you can look at the infinite number of home decorating magazines. The key is, to take inspiration and adapt it for living room decorating ideas for an apartment. It is also very important to use your own creativity to design a living room that will reflect your style and give it a personalized look.Very often, the artwork that you add to your walls is one of the finishing touches of your living room’s decor. While that approach can work very well, you may find it easier to design a living room – or any room – around a work of art that inspires you. Using an inspiration piece is an excellent way to decorate if you are stumped for ideas or if you aren’t confident of your ability to combine colors and pull a room together. The inspiration piece artwork provides an automatic recipe for success in your room: It gives you a color palette, style and theme that you already find appealing.orrowing” the Artwork’s Color PaletteTo use an artwork as the inspiration for your living room’s color palette, take a few minutes to analyze the colors used in the piece. A prominent color can be the accent color for your room. Now choose two additional colors from the artwork; a good approach is to choose a neutral plus one other shade. Use the neutral on your walls and the other color as a major player, perhaps in the most prominent pieces of furniture and curtain panel. Then sprinkle in your accent color in throw pillows, lamps and shades and other accents, then tie all the colors together again in a beautiful area rug that anchors your seating area. This is a nearly infallible way to decorate a room and it creates a striking, well coordinated effect.Dabble with the Theme of the ArtworkThe subject or theme of the painting or artwork can influence the entire style of your room. For instance, a painting of a French vineyard can influence a room done in French country style or an exceptional canyon painting can inspire you to create a living room in a southwestern motif. In addition to taking this thematic approach for the overall style of your room, you can pick up images in the painting or artwork and repeat them in the room. A fleur de lis tapestry in the background of the painting can be repeated in fleur de lis wall decor or a subtle fleur de lis pattern in pillows or window treatment fabrics, for example.Using your Inspiration Piece as a Focal Point
While you can certainly use your inspiration piece as a supporting player in the room, you can also feature it as a primary focal point. This is especially easy to do if the piece is large: Hang it over the fireplace mantle or give it some other place of prominence that commands attention and pulls all the threads of the room together. If your inspiration piece is smaller, you can still use it as an effective focal point. For example, if a small canvas painting or photograph of the beach was your inspiration, you can prop it on the mantel or a shelf and arrange sea shells and an ocean breeze scented candle set inside a classic glass hurricane as accompaniments.

Living room is one such place in a house, which reveals our sense of living and personality. It is one of the most important rooms in a house where all family members, relatives, friends and guests enjoy beautiful moments of life, share their experiences and do some important discussions. In all sense, a living room is really a LIVELY place of a house.Living room furniture and decor acts like a mirror which reflects one’s style and interests in just one view. But other than this, it should have enough universal appeal that anyone who visits can feel at ease. So, a living room furniture should be such, which not only coordinates with other articles of room, rather it should also provide ultimate comfort to guests and family. Also, a living room should be able to distinguish itself from other rooms, owing for its unique identity.Living room furniture should be chosen wisely, since it creates an everlasting impression on guests. From wooden to metallic, and fabrics to leather furniture, there are numerous options of furniture collections that allow decorating this part of house in an exquisite way.In general, living room furniture set normally consists of sofas, futon chairs, coffee table, home theater system, display cabinets and dressers. Other living room furniture pieces include futon beds, side tables, bean bags and bean chairs. One should know the proper measurements of living room before going to place an order for living room furniture. Depending upon choice, Classic and Contemporary are two most favored styles for living room’s furniture. Let’s have a brief discussion on both of these furniture is often a quintessential option and almost a synonymous to classic furniture. It usually comprises a boxy-shaped sofa with stylish curves and comfortable soft cushions covered in a long-wearing woven stripe or damask. A symbol of elegance and simplicity in ancient days, wooden living room furniture hasn’t lost its sheen or value even today. There are still many types of wooden sofas and couches that will mesmerize you.ontemporary or modern style of living room furniture is characterized by its bold colors and elegant, yet simple, design. Sad and lonely he walked into the pub hoping to drown his sorrows in a few glasses of beer. After he had placed the order, he sat on the stool dejected glancing towards the television every few minutes to watch “While you were out.” Tears streamed down his face when he saw the couple on television, happy with the way the interior designers had transformed their house…. he so wished that he could invite them to do up his living room and in turn create some space for his baby who was due in a few months. Still a believer in miracles, Edwin picked up the phone and dialed their number…maybe God would intervene! All of us wish for that moment that changes everything for the better, that little spark of hope that reverses time. Doing up the house creates that change; it brings about a transformation that is favorable! You need not call a professional designer to do up your home interior; instead doing it up yourself would come across more effectively. Here are some ideas for your living room.Know Who You AreSelecting a design for your house might make you realize that you tastes have changed over the years, it is thus important to update yourself with newer designs that still mirror who you are. You can do this by looking through designing magazines and discussing ideas with other family members. Spread Some ColorA fresh coat of paint does wonders for any room. It is possible to use color to transform a drab living room into another that is stylish. If you have decided to paint your house, select colors that you can pair. You can also use monochromatic colors and use a brush, a roller or your hands to change the entire look of the living room. Window To The WorldIt’s your world and you have the right to spruce it up the way you like! Improve the atmosphere and the look by selecting drapes or curtains that compliment the design style that you have selected. While selecting the drapes, make sure that they are thick and rich looking, ensuring this will make the living room interiors appear opulent.Light Changes EverythingLights are my favorite addition to a room. With the range of lights available in the market, it is now a known fact that there is a light for every dark space! It is important to have adequate lighting in the living room; this is possible by using updated overhead fixtures to provide general light. For task lighting, you can add a few lamps around the room. Apart from the light that is emitted from electricity you can include candles to spread the lights. You cannot go wrong with the wide range of metallic, stone and glass candle stands and beautiful and colorful candles that are available in the market. Simple AdditionsLet you imagination run riot and your creativity flow to unprecedented heights. An important aspect of designing is to use various accessories to highlights the color of the walls, or to add color to the room. Sometimes things like painted canvases and large and colorful rugs serve as the focal point of a room. Arrange the furniture around this! Other additions to the living room are – Pillows, cushions, flower vases and swarovski crystals. Remember to try and keep the living room uncrowded, doing this will ensure that the overall effect is just perfect! Seating SolutionsSelect furniture according to the size of the room and the color you have selected. Some pieces require a lot of care and maintenance, so take tips from the store that you buy it from.
Even a small kitchen any home has can get the makeover it needs to embody the style and creativity of those living, cooking and dining in it. With the aid of these simple kitchen design makeover tips and style concepts, you can easily get that designer kitchen you have dreamed of.

Some kitchens have an incompetent layout or plan which is why sometimes it feels too overcrowded even if there are a few people in the kitchen. If your kitchen has this kind of floor plan then you would need some major redesigning that is if your finances allow it. Try lengthening a few countertops, removing bulky pantry shelves or getting rid of that center island. In place of the pantry shelves, try cupboards or cabinets. Some expert kitchen designers even suggest closed shelves located below countertops and open cabinets, storage shelves, rack, cupboards and hooks above.

Aside from redesigning cabinets and countertops to get more space, appliances should all be placed in one corner of the kitchen such as the fridge, microwave, sink and stove. This way you would not need to move across the kitchen when cooking plus it organizes appliances at one corner or side of the kitchen for ease of movement plus more space.

If you have a pantry or portable carts then it is best that you utilize these for placing unused appliances or those not needed for cooking. Renovating your kitchen and reorganizing the items in it not only gives the illusion of more space despite its size but also makes work inside the kitchen convenient and easy. In repainting your kitchen, try using soft, huge and pale colors that mirror or reflect light. Doing so adds a tall feeling to any small kitchen. Gallant wall colors would also create the feeling of a spacious kitchen despite the size. A lot of expert kitchen designers also advise to put in excellent lighting under higher shells or even add spot lights in the kitchens’ ceiling. Light has been proven to create the effect of being in a larger room. Simply stick to these tips and in no time that small kitchen of yours would create the feel of a huge kitchen enough for cooking class.

It is to start on Monday with the removal of the first five of the painting’s 20 canvasses from Moravský Krumlov castle, where the work has been on display for nearly 60 years. Officials of the city of Prague, which is the legal owner of the work, argue that the move has to happen immediately due to the poor state of its current exhibition space.

Much attention has been paid to the two main players in the ongoing legal dispute surrounding Mucha’s masterpiece. But what does the loss of this huge attraction mean for the town that has been housing the Slav Epic for decades? Jaroslav Mokrý is the town’s mayor.

The Slav Epic in Moravský Krumlov “Mucha’s Slav Epic has an irrefutable and boundless significance for the town of Moravský Krumlov, because it is the only great attraction and historical piece that makes a visit to our town worthwhile. Remember, Moravský Krumlov was bombed by the Soviets in the last two days of the Second World War, and nothing was left here, just two historical buildings. And luckily, the Slav Epic was exhibited in our castle. Some 20,000 visitors came to see it each year, and with all the media attention recently, there were even up to 35,000 visitors a year.”

The Mucha family opposes the move of the Slav Epic to Prague’s Veletržni Palác on the grounds that it would only be a temporary solution rather than provide a permanent home for the masterpiece, one of the painter’s conditions when he donated it to the city in 1928.

For the town of Moravský Krumlov, the move of its main attraction will most likely have harsh financial consequences. Mayor Mokrý again.

“If there are between 20,000 to 35,000 visitors a year, then they do not just spend money on the entry fee to see the Slav Epic. Two thirds of them will also eat lunch in our local restaurants, which also opened precisely because of those tourists. If we no longer have these visitors, those restaurants will have to close down.”

Students’ protest in Moravský Krumlov, photo: CTK Students in the small Moravian town have organized a protest against the move of the Slav Epic, to take place on Sunday. Meanwhile, Prague’s Municipal Gallery has pledged to support Moravský Krumlov by loaning out works by other famous Czech artists for display in its castle, an offer that local officials are currently discussing.

Regardless of what type of home you reside in, whether it be a condo in the city, an apartment on the edge of town or you simply just want to decorate the smaller rooms inside of your home; interior design can be a challenge in this type of environment because of the limited space and options. However, you can still maintain a sense of style without requiring a large area of space, because essentially it is only one room that you are decorating; right? If you keep things simple and organized, home decor selection for small rooms can be easy!
If you take the right design approach, you can simplify the decorating process and make it so that the room seems larger than it really is, once the process is all said and done. Focusing on organization and storage will help you create an atmosphere that is not only functional and elemental, but also very structured or random depending on which way you wanted to take it. In some cases, randomness in room construction can make for an interested design process.
Take into consideration the following steps when preparing your plan for the room:
1. Focus on the desired functionality of the room. Use this as the foundation for which you will build upon with furniture, artwork, accessories, etc.
2. Choose furniture and decorative items by size and position, to ensure that the room is not cluttered and remains organized.
3. Find furnishings that serve multiple purposes, which will help improve your storage capacity (such as end tables with drawers, sleeper sofas, etc.) and increase the functionality of the room as a whole.
4. Place accent pieces in areas that highlight your room’s color theme, such as corners and around windows. Avoid placing items directly in front of the wall, but rather accent the outside portion of the room, making it seem bigger.
5. A small room must have plenty of lighting because this really helps to visually open up space. If it is possible, consider a built-in lighting structure such as track or recessed elements. If this is not a possibility or is overbudget, use small accent lamps to light up the corners.
Coordinate your palette and the room will come together by itself. Keep in mind the above mentioned techniques and just have fun with it!
