Brian Wood was driving the couple’s Subaru Outback, with pregnant Erin in the passenger seat, when an oncoming Chevy Blazer crossed over the center lane in front of them. Brian swerved the car so that his side absorbed much of the impact and was killed. Erin survived.

Two moons on 27 August 2010

Two Moons on August 27 is just a hoax. Every year an email comes out that says that Mars will be at its closest to Earth and it will be a once in a life time experience, one that must not be missed.

The email goes on to say that it will feature in the sky and will be as large as our own moon. The fact of the matter is that this email is a hoax and does the rounds every time this year and still people fall for it. The truth is that Mars is further from us at the moment then any other time this summer.

So how did the hoax email come about? In 2003 on 27th August Mars did pass very close to Earth and it was the closest the planets had come together for around about 60,000 years. The actual distance between the two planets was approximately 34.5 million miles. Every other year after 2003 an email is sent out to tell people about the amazing phenomenon and don’t miss it.

So literally all over the planets thousands of people will be sitting out watching the night sky tomorrow expecting to see Mars as big as our own moon. Because people expect to see our own moon and Mars at the same time and the same size the email has come to be known as the “two moons rumour”

Although the hoax has been going on since 2003 many people still fall for it, the reason being is that the internet is growing year by year. Which means not everyone has seen the email, so if you have only just got on-line for the first time and get the email there’s a good chance you will be searching the night sky tomorrow, unless of course you are reading this before the event

If you want to see if anyone in your neighbourhood have fallen for the two moon email then just step outside on the 27th Aug 2010, and see if anyone is watching the night sky. No doubt they will tell you that they are having a late night barbecue.

By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER
(AP)
–

WASHINGTON — For jobless Americans struggling to pay their bills and keep their homes, the restoration of unemployment benefits could keep their crisis from getting worse.

The same might be said of the broader economy.

The Senate is expected to vote late Tuesday to keep providing unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks to more than 5 million long-term unemployed. The injection of an estimated billion into a .6 trillion economy over the next five months won’t be enough to energize the recovery. But economists say it could at least help sustain it.

The vote comes as evidence mounts that growth is slowing. Consumers, facing lower home values and high unemployment, are saving more and spending cautiously. The housing market is slumping again after a tax credit expired in April. And the impact of last year’s 7 billion stimulus package has begun to fade.

By extending the unemployment aid, Congress will remove one potential drag on the economy, analysts say.

“It reduces the likelihood of a double-dip recession,” said Gus Faucher, an economist at Moody’s Analytics.

During the recession, Congress provided up to 73 extra weeks of unemployment aid, paid for by the federal government. They came on top of the 26 weeks customarily provided by the states.

But the extra benefits expired in early June. They had been routinely extended during the worst parts of the recession. But Congress reached an impasse last month. Republicans demanded that the extension be paid for with leftover stimulus money. Democrats countered that unemployment benefits are normally considered an emergency need and paid for by adding to the deficit.

About 2.5 million people ran out of jobless aid during the political battle. They will now have the aid restored retroactively. That could create chaos if state unemployment offices are flooded with people seeking to reapply.

An additional 3 million people were still receiving aid under the extended benefits program. They will be able to keep doing so.

The legislation Congress is expected to approve will inject billion into the economy by renewing the extra benefits through the end of November. That money will likely be spent quickly and generate extra economic activity, economists say. Jobless aid is widely seen as providing more “bang for the buck” than many other stimulus programs.

“It recycles very quickly into the economy,” said David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor’s. “If that’s your only source of money, you’re going to spend it.”

Moody’s Analytics estimates that every dollar of unemployment aid generates .61 in economic activity. Still, that translates into a boost of only billion — less than one-half of 1 percent of the overall economy.

“It’s not going to make or break” the recovery, Faucher said.

Weekly unemployment checks average about 9, though they vary widely by state. Benefit levels also depend on how much a recipient earned while working. The checks are financed through a tax on employers.

Many of those out of work don’t receive unemployment benefits. Only those who have lost jobs through no fault of their own are eligible. Applicants must also have earned certain minimum pay, set by the states.

Partly because of the extensions, about two-thirds of the nearly 15 million unemployed are receiving unemployment aid. That’s a greater proportion than in previous downturns. The Obama administration’s stimulus package encouraged many states to expand eligibility to part-time workers and other groups.

In recessions, Congress usually adds extra weeks as unemployment rises and hiring slows. The federal government also pays for the extensions to lessen the burden on states, which are required to balance their budgets. Many experts argue that the program, begun in the 1930s, is ill-equipped to handle extended downturns. One result is that the program has been extended in almost every recession and often gets tangled in political fights.

The current benefit extensions are the longest on record.

Of the 2.5 million people whose benefits will be restored, nearly 430,000 are in California, nearly 200,000 are in New York, 175,000 are in Florida and 174,000 are in Pennsylvania, the Labor Department estimates. Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Texas also have more than 100,000 recipients who were cut off.

Unlike with some previous extensions, Congress isn’t adding extra weeks. It’s just keeping the extended program going.

For those who have exhausted all their 99 weeks, the Senate’s vote Tuesday provides little hope. They face the prospect of looking for work even as hiring remains slow, with the unemployment rate at 9.5 percent.

“There’s a lot more people than jobs out there right now,” Wyss said.

OMFG!
Since its groundbreaking introduction on the Canadian airwaves over twenty years ago, DEGRASSI has never shied away from touchy subjects and tonight’s movie event is no exception. Seriously. If you thought abortion, date rape and school shootings were risqué, just wait until you get a load of what Declan’s sister Fiona is struggling with. In a word, “Ewwwwwwwww!”

The Hangover.
Luckily for fans of two of DEGRASSI’s most iconic characters, what happens in Niagara Falls doesn’t stay in Niagara Falls. Particularly when a night of drunken debauchery culminates in one of the most random weddings in the show’s history complete with a very SAVED BY THE BELL: WEDDING IN LAS VEGAS-esque cameo by a much beloved character who we haven’t seen in years.

Kids Say the Darndest Things.
Only Holly J. Sinclair would have the audacity to assume that her ‘anchor work’ at her small Toronto high school would warrant her an on air spot on TVM (DEGRASSI’s Version of MTV). No joke, Holly J, you complete us.

Cameo Alert!
Out: Perez Hilton. In: Your source for advanced celebrity dish Lainey Gossip, who gets a much-deserved turn to show off her acting chops. Oh, and she’s not the only C-list celebrity who pops by. Fans can also expect a cameo by TOP MODEL’s Jay Manuel and a more substantial role for MTV Canada’s Jessi Cruickshank who does her best impersonation of a TVM on-air personality.

Fond Farewells.
Whereas DEGRASSI GOES HOLLYWOOD was an opportunity to bid adieu to original series stars Lauren Collins (Page), Adamo Ruggiero (Marco), Stacey Farber (Ellie), and Jake Epstein (Craig), tonight’s movie serves as a fond farewell to Paula Brancati (Jane), Dalmar Abuzeid (Danny), and a possible goodbye to original series stars Miriam McDonald (Emma), Cassie Steele (Manny), Spinner (Shane Kippel) and Jay (Mike Lobel). Well that, or as my Canadian cohort to the West cleverly observed, a no-brainer spin-off of their very own!

DEGRASSI: <strike>TAKES MANHATTAN</strike> THE HEAT IS ON airs tonight at 9PM on Teen Nick. Canadians who missed Friday’s broadcast can catch it online on demand at muchmusic.ca

By The Associated Press
(AP)
–

A summary of events Wednesday, July 14, Day 85 of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that began with the April 20 explosion and fire on the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd. and leased by BP PLC, which is in charge of cleanup and containment. The blast killed 11 workers. Since then, oil has been pouring into the Gulf from a blown-out undersea well.

STOPPING THE STOPPING THE FLOW

BP froze activity on two key projects Wednesday meant to choke off the flow of oil billowing from its broken well in the Gulf of Mexico after days of moving confidently toward controlling the crisis. The development was a stunning setback after the oil giant finally seemed to be on track following nearly three months of failed attempts to stop the spill, which has sullied beaches from Florida to Texas and decimated the multibillion dollar Gulf fishing industry. The oil giant and the government said more analysis was needed before testing could proceed on a new temporary well cap — the best hope since April of stopping the geyser. Work on a permanent fix, relief wells that will plug the spill from below with mud and cement, also was halted.

SPEWING

Oil continued to spew nearly unimpeded into the water, with no clear timeline on when it would stop. “We want to move forward with this as soon as we are ready to do it,” said Kent Wells, a BP senior vice president. BP had zipped through weekend preparations for getting the 75-ton cap in place and undersea robots locked it smoothly into place Monday atop the well, raising hopes the gusher could be checked for the first time since the Deepwater Horizon rig leased by BP exploded April 20, killing 11 workers. Wells said that it was the government’s call late Tuesday to re-evaluate plans for testing the new cap, and that plans were on hold for at least 24 hours. Federal officials and the company will re-evaluate the best path forward after that time period.

WASHINGTON

The run-up to the now-delayed testing process was being closely monitored from Washington. Allen, who came to BP’s U.S. offices in Houston on Tuesday, also met with Energy Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Geological Survey head Marcia McNutt along with BP and industry representatives. And President Obama has been receiving multiple daily briefings on the work’s progress, his adviser David Axelrod said.

RELIEF WELL

Work on a permanent fix, a relief well that would plug the leak with heavy drilling mud and cement, was halted for up to 48 hours as a precaution because it’s not yet clear what effect the testing of the new cap could have on it. BP said on Tuesday that it halted work on a second relief well, but that holdup was expected. The company is drilling the second well as a backup in case the first doesn’t work. The relief well’s timeframe has always been hazy, with company and federal officials giving estimates ranging from the end of July to the middle of August before it can be completed.

REACTIONS

The surprise delay jarred Gulf Coast residents already weary of unending gloom. On the Alabama coast, Joyce Nelson said every bit of news from the spill site increases her stress and sparks a new round of telephone calls between friends and relatives in Bayou La Batre, where the seafood industry is virtually shut down because of the spill. The slowdown at the rig site just made things worse. Roger N. Anderson, a marine geologist at Columbia University, said he believes BP and government scientists are just being very cautious and he’s not worried. Freezing work on the relief well may mean scientists are worried that clamping down the cap will push new pressure all the way down to the depths of the broken well, he said. “So I wouldn’t panic, is the answer. They’re going to be very, very deliberate about this,” Anderson said.

BANKING

Regulators urged banks to make loans to creditworthy people and businesses whose livelihoods have been hurt by the Gulf Oil spill. In a joint statement issued Wednesday, the regulators said banks should make an effort to work with customers to help them get over any financial humps. Doing so, will help the local economies heal and strengthen the long-term relationships between the banks and their customers. “Banks can help customers recover financially and be better positioned to honor their obligations,” the regulators said. “In the affected areas, these efforts can also contribute to the health of local communities.” The agencies making the plea include federal regulators, such as the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., along with the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, which oversees banks at the local level.

FOOD WEB

Scientists report early signs that the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is altering the marine food web by killing or tainting some creatures and spurring the growth of others more suited to a fouled environment. Near the spill site, researchers have documented a massive die-off of pyrosomes — cucumber-shaped, gelatinous organisms fed on by endangered sea turtles. Along the coast, droplets of oil are being found inside the shells of young crabs that are a mainstay in the diet of fish, turtles and shorebirds. And at the base of the food web, tiny organisms that consume oil and gas are proliferating. If such impacts continue, the scientists warn of a grim reshuffling of sea life that could over time cascade through the ecosystem and imperil the region’s multibillion-dollar fishing industry.

SEA TURTLES

The first sea turtles to hatch from eggs evacuated to Florida’s Kennedy Space Center because of the Gulf Coast oil spill have been released into the Atlantic Ocean. Biologist Jane Provancha says the newborn Kemp’s ridley sea turtles did well after their release. About 700 sea turtle nests — each containing about 100 eggs — are being trucked from oiled shores along the Gulf to Cape Canaveral, where they’re kept at a climate-controlled facility. The turtles are being released into the Atlantic as they hatch. Scientists feared that a generation of the imperiled species would die if they hatched and swam into the oil.

DETROIT — Corvette owners could soon be revving up an engine they built with their own hands.

General Motors Co. said Monday that buyers who order a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 can help assemble their cars’ high-performance LS7 and LS9 engines. The automaker believes the program is the first of its kind in the industry.

The engines will be built at GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., where GM assembles all of its high-performance engines by hand. The facility can assemble up to 15,000 engines per year, GM spokesman Tom Read said.

Read said it will take buyers about six hours to assemble, adjust and clean their engines with the parts provided. A skilled technician will supervise.

The 2011 Corvettes are just going into production and will go on sale soon. Read said the company expects to have customers building their own engines as soon as next month. GM sold 13,934 Corvettes last year, according to AutoData Corp.

GM suggests dealers charge ,800 for the engine-building program, which doesn’t include air transportation but does include one night of lodging. But that’s just a fraction of the cost of a Corvette Z06, which starts at around ,000, or a ZR1, which is more than 0,000.

The engine-building program joins a list of special options available exclusively to Corvette owners. ZR1 buyers can attend free Corvette driving courses in Arizona or Nevada, for example. For a fee, Corvette buyers can also have their sports cars delivered to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., or watch their Corvettes be built at the Bowling Green assembly plant.

Read said the program shows the lengths Chevrolet will go to for its customers. The program could also help build positive buzz for the company, which is planning an initial public offering as early as October.

The U.S. Treasury Department has owned 61 percent of the automaker after a brief stay in bankruptcy protection last year.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects to say program does include lodging in graph 6. Changes GM to Chevrolet in graph 8.)

KAMPALA, Uganda — Somalia’s most dangerous al-Qaida-linked militant group claimed responsibility Monday for twin bombings in Uganda that killed 74 people watching the World Cup final on TV, saying the militants would carry out attacks “against out enemy” wherever they are.

Al-Shabab, whose ranks are swelled by militant veterans of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, has long threatened to attack outside of Somalia’s borders, but the bombings late Sunday are the first time the group has done so.

“We will carry out attacks against our enemy wherever they are,” Rage said. “No one will deter us from performing our Islamic duty.”

The Somali militants appear to have attacked sites in Uganda because the country contributes troops to the African Union-led peacekeeping force that protects Somalia’s weak, U.N.-backed government.

The attacks outside the Somalia represent a dangerous new step in al-Shabab’s increasingly militant path.

The death toll in Sunday’s twin blasts rose to 74 on Monday, Ugandan officials said.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — A spokesman for the Somali militant group al-Shabab is claiming responsibility for the twin bombings in Uganda that killed 74 people.

Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage, a militant spokesman in Mogadishu, claimed responsibility.

Ugandan officials had suspected the Somali group of being behind the late Sunday attacks, which took place on two sites in the Ugandan capital as people watched the World Cup final.

The attacks are the first time that the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab has attacked sites outside Somalia.
