Her name is Poppy Love. She’s a fiberglass West Highland white terrier covered with brightly painted poppies who spent the summer in front of the Balise Mazda dealership on Riverdale Street in West Springfield.

Another oversized dog from her litter, Dr. Hairy Barker, has spent his summer stationed outside of a veterinarian’s office dressed in a white lab coat, while his pal, Tooth Tari, guards a dentist’s office.

These 36-pound fiberglass canines are among the 46 so-called terriers around town that comprise the first public art project in West Springfield’s history.

The dogs, which will be auctioned off next month, were bolted to concrete slabs and stationed throughout the town during the summer. They have generated so much interest that untold numbers of people keep track of their whereabouts, post online photos taken with them, collect memorabilia emblazoned with their portraits, and share stories created about them by adoring admirers.

“The public has become so possessive of them,” said artist Jane Barrientos, who conceived the idea for Terriers Around Town and brought it to life with West Springfield resident and hair sylist Christine Costani.

To date, the dogs’ lives are being followed by more than 1,000 Facebook fans, who have written interesting tales about each of them based on the theme the artist chose for the dog. One chronicles the ongoing romance between Dapper Dog, who sits in front of Lattitude Restaurant on Memorial Avenue, and Maria Margarita of Mardi Gras, who makes her home at Gate 2 at the Big E Exposition grounds.

The goal behind the fanciful community-arts project is to raise money for the Arts in Education program in West Springfield public schools. Barrientos and Costanzi both home-schooled their children, and believe students need more than academics to develop into well-rounded, responsible adults.

They modeled their project after other fiberglass art displays/auctions held across the country, showcasing cows, pigs, bears (Easthampton), and even sneakers (Springfield). “We decided to use the town mascot to increase awareness of our community pride, spirit, and respect, as well as to promote West Springfield as a destination for lovers of art,” said Costani.

To that end, many businesses have become involved with the exhibit, which has spawned numerous events, including a naked puppy party (before the artists went to work), a puppy parade, an auction preview party, and a gala charity auction that will be held Oct. 15 inside the new Balise Honda showroom on Riverdale Street. Tickets to the dressy affair are $ 75 and include food catered by Lattitude. “There will be a raw bar, two carving stations, and an open wine and beer bar,” Barrientos said.

Two dozen dogs have already been purchased by sponsors, but the 22 that remain will be auctioned off during the evening. Memorabilia, including magnets, coffee mugs, and a coffee-table book with photos of the dogs will also be sold. The goal is to raise $ 70,000, and Barrientos said they hope to reach it, since they have already made $ 10,000 from donations and the sale of gift items. However, they are still seeking donations for a raffle. For more information or tickets, visit www.terriersaround town.com or call Costani at (413) 233-7771.

Some of the dogs have already been removed from the spots they occupied all summer in preparation for the auction. But they all can be seen during the daily parade at the Big E on West Springfield Day, which will take place Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. They will sit on antique trucks while the artists who gave them personalities march beside them.

Barrientos and Costani were inspired to launch the art project after seeing the success that similar fiberglass outdoor art displays/auctions have generated. “Easthampton held a Bear Fest a year before us, Pittsfield used sheep, and Venice, Fla. had pigs,” Barrientos said, adding that Costani viewed that exhibit as well as one that featured fiberglass cows in Chicago.

The women began their campaign by soliciting design ideas from artists who expressed interest in painting a dog. They also knocked on doors and asked businesses to become sponsors.“We called on more than 200 businesses with School Committee member Pat Garbacik, who is also an artist,” Barrientos said.

Balise was the first to sign up. Vice President of Finance Michael DuBois said the project fit in perfectly with their philosophy of making charitable donations to causes that support children and education.

“This passed our litmus test, and (company President) Jeb Balise was very interested; we have a big footprint in West Springfield and a big stake here, so we feel a responsibility toward the community,” said DuBois, adding that the company’s collison center put a clear coat on all of the dogs after the artists finished painting them.

“One of our graphic artists designed a dog she called Copper that is wearing a [painted] police officer’s uniform,” he said, adding that Balise is delighted to host the auction in their new showroom.

Businesses that sponsored a dog were allowed to choose from more than 70 designs, as well as where their dog would be placed during the summer months.

“We constantly looked for connections,” Barrientos said, adding that many business people have discovered new resources via networking that has taken place at their events.

The women are amazed at the number of professionals who have lent their services to help. They include Atty. Simon Brighenti, who helped them navigate through the town’s regulations; CPA Nicholas LaPier; and Pete Morgan, who made the concrete slabs the dogs sat on, then spent six unpaid days with his employees working to position the dogs around town. United Bank served as a major sponsor of the project.

Parent-teacher organizations have also gotten involved, and 250 kindergartners and faculty members from John Ashley School put their thumbprints and names on a dog purchased for them by Kohls. It will be taken to the high school to sit on the lawn until the class graduates.

“This project will become part of the town’s history,” said Barrientos, adding that two families sponsored terriers, and a terrier tour map was created so people interested in the exhibit could find all of the dogs.

“There had never been a fiberglass terrier in the world before this,” Barrientos said. “Now, every one of our dogs has an amazing story, and so many people have connected with each as a result.”

Or, to put it simply, they have put their Poppy Love into action.

Willow Smith “Whip My Hair” music single proves the Smith family is a complete business success. Willow Smith, 9, is the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and the sister of Jadan Smith, 12. “Whip My Hair” marks Willow Smith’s debut as a singer.

Willow Smith “Whip My Hair”

Willow Smith “Whip My Hair” is a single from her forthcoming debut album. According to AOL Radio, the Willow Smith album will be released on Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label. The release date has not yet been set. Listening to Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” is sure to make women of all ages want to whip their locks – long or short.

Will Smith from The Fresh Prince to The Last Pharaoh

Will Smith started as MC of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince leading to his role in television show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” In 2007, Newsweek referred to Will Smith as the most powerful actor on the planet. Wikipedia reveals Will is currently developing a film entitled The Last Pharaoh. He will star as Taharqa in the film.

Will Smith is a power player with President Barack Obama stating if a film were made about his life, he wanted Smith to play him. Obama said he “has the ears.” Obama said the duo discussed the possibility of a film based on the 2008 election. It may not happen until Obama’s presidency ends.

Will must be proud of his daughter Willow to record “Whip My Hair” at just nine years old, especially after his early musical success as The Fresh Prince.

Jada Pinkett Smith from A Different World to Hawthorne

Jada Pinkett Smith started acting in the early 1990s in television shows such as True Colors and Bill Cosby’s A Different World. Jada went on to become a successful actress, musician, writer and businesswoman internationally.

By 1997, Jada married Will after meeting him on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. In 2002, Jada formed the metal band Wicked Wisdom. She is currently the producer and star of TNT’s medical drama Hawthorne.

Jada owns the music company 100% Womon Productions and created her own fashion label in 1994 called Maja. In 2004, she published her first children’s book, Girls Hold Up This World. Willow Smith appears on the cover with her mother.

Jada said, “I wrote the book for Willow and for her friends and for all the little girls in the world who need affirmation about being female in this pretty much masculine world. I really tried to capture different sides of femininity. I want girls in the world to feel powerful, to know they have the power to change the world in any way they wish.”

Willow Smith “Whip My Hair” single released at just nine years old shows she is already ready to prove her power to the world.

Jadan Smith “Karate Kid”

As the older brother, Jadan Smith proved to his little sister you could achieve success at a young age. In 2006, Jadan’s breakthrough role was in the film The Pursuit of Happyness. Jadan also starred in remakes of The Day the Earth Stood Still and this summer’s hit movie The Karate Kid.

This stellar family of four shows how love, support and dedication equal success. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith came from everyday homes. Their desire to achieve has been passed on to their two children, Jadan and Willow. The Smiths are an example to everyone during these difficult times.

News of severe flooding in Eastern Tennessee coupled with the midweek forecast for heavy rains had many local residents watching the waters of the Cumberland and Red Rivers this week, fearful of a repeat performance of last May’s devastating floods. While our Eastern neighbors have been hard hit, the Cumberland River is expected to crest in Clarksville on Friday at 40 feet, far below the 62.8 feet of the May floods, according to the National Weather Service and still six feet below the city’s official flood stage of 46 feet.

Emergency management officials have continually monitored the situation, noting that 40 feet is the “action stage,” the point where decisions must be considered on how to respond to the rising water. Clarksville is downstream from the heaviest rain and storms, and all that water has been running off terrain and draining from tributaries into the Cumberland — and headed toward Montgomery County.

On a positive note, the rain was a bit lighter and end ended a bit sooner than forecast on Wednesday, all of which had officials breathing a sigh of relief.

Cookeville was inundated by floods from this weather system, which was fueled in part by the remnants of Tropical Depression 5 that dissipated as it swept through southern Louisiana and Mississippi over the first half of the week. Tn came in waves, in the pattern but not the ferocity of a true tropical storm.

Sumner and Wilson counties received 4-6 inches of rain, roads were flooded or closed in sections of Mt. Juliet and Gallatin, and nursing home patients were evacuated from a facility near a rising creek in Macon County. In Putnam County, a home was pulled from its foundation by raging water, roads were damaged and small bridges destroyed. A train derailed when its railbed was was away.

Nashville is under a flood warning through Friday morning with a river crest of 40 feet. At 40.0 feet, flooding begins along the river in and around the Nashville metropolitan area. Flood waters approach some industrial areas downtown and Cumberland Field Airport. At 39.0 feet, water overflows the river bank along Pennington bend near Opry Mills, which was inundated by the May floods, and approaches the landing at riverfront park in downtown Nashville. At 38.5 feet, the Pennington Bend area near Opry Mills begins to flood.

Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS – Hoosiers eligible to resume collecting the federally funded unemployment extensions will be able to begin filing online for those benefits on Tuesday, August 3, 2010. The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) anticipates the recently passed law will restore eligibility to approximately 80,000 Hoosiers covering nearly 250,000 weeks of payments.

In order to qualify for these retroactive benefits, Hoosiers will need to complete their weekly vouchers through Indiana’s online filing system. Each Hoosier will need to verify they were unemployed through no fault of their own, report where they looked for work each week and list any outside income earned each week in question. Hoosiers will need to complete a voucher for each week of benefits they want to collect.

Hoosiers moving into the Extended Benefits (EB) program, the final tier of benefits, will not have vouchers available on August 3. It is a requirement of the Extended Benefits program that each person applies in person at their local WorkOne Center and brings their eligibility letter from DWD. The department will resume sending those letters this week. Hoosiers previously enrolled in Extended Benefits will have vouchers available beginning August 3 to collect the benefits they had remaining when the program ended on June 12.

Due to the anticipated increase of claims, Indiana’s 27 full-service WorkOne Centers will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 3 through Friday, August 6. WorkOne Express Offices will maintain normal business hours. In addition, payments on eligible vouchers will be made within 48 hours during that week.

“We recognize that some people may need additional assistance filing up to eight weeks of vouchers, so we are going to keep our offices open late next week,” said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

This new federal legislation changes the weekly federal additional payment. Anyone who previously collected the per week will continue to collect this money weekly. Individuals who file new initial unemployment claims after May 29, 2010 will not receive the additional per week.

Hoosiers eligible for retroactive benefits should visit their homepage on Indiana’s online filing system prior to July 31 to make sure they don’t have any pending applications or links seeking information. In some cases this information will be required for vouchers to appear by August 3.

Answers to frequently asked questions about this extension are available at http://www.in.gov/dwd/2750.htm.

Hoosiers can find their nearest WorkOne Center at www.workoneworks.com

As a signifier of the coming end of the long, football-less summer, the annual Big 12 Media Days always generate a little excitement. “Hey! They’re actually talking football! The end is nigh.”

As a legitimate news event? That’s a little dicier. Everyone at this point loves their chances, is excited about the possibilities, has the utmost respect for everything. You know the drill.

But with the tumultuous offseason Nebraska had, there was some hope that this year might be different. This was the last Big 12 Media Days for NU and probably the most anticipated. Would things get chippy? What are relations like in the conference today? Will comedy-Bo or curt-Bo show up?

What we got was “business as usual” Bo, a phrase he used a couple of times during his session with the print media.

Right from the start, Pelini announced that he wasn’t taking any Big 10 questions. Not surprising. What is there to say?

Also not surprising, the first question Pelini got was about the move to the Big 10, phrased in a way that he at least answered it.

Bo Pelini on how he handled news of the move with the team:
“Business as usual. In our program, the way we run our program, we talk to our guys about focusing on the process and what they have to do on a day to day basis to compete. That hasn’t changed. We really haven’t talked much about it. We’re looking forward to the fall and we’ve been doing our homework on our opponents, obviously our non-conference opponents first. We think we have an opportunity to be a good football team.”

On entering his third year as coach:
“I think it’s a big thing. Unfortunately in my coaching career I’ve had a lot of three year stints. I always felt like the third year in the system, the third year together you really have a chance to make a big jump. You have a lot of people in there, a lot of guys in the program who understand what you want, understand what the expectations are and understand exactly how to go about the process of becoming a good football player and a good football team. We’re excited about that.

After the Arizona game when I said “Nebraska’s back,” I wasn’t saying we’d arrive, that we were ready or that we’d won a national championship or anything like that. I finally felt that the culture we were trying to instill from the point that we got there had taken hold. That excites me as a head football coach. I really feel like we’re at that point where we can beat anybody we line up against or compete with anybody we line up against. That’s exciting for me and exciting for the program.”

On the message he’s received from Texas high school coaches about recruiting and the Big 10:
“Like I said, it’s been business as usual. Hasn’t had any impact on us.”

On fan reception in NU’s final year in the Big 12:
“You don’t reall know but I don’t really anticipate any problems. Number one, the leadership in the Big 12, from Dan Beebe and his staff, is exceptional. You go throughout the conference and the fans and institutions of the Big 12 are highly respected institutions. Very classy programs, very classy fans so I don’t anticipate any ramifications as far as that’s concerned. All we’re concerned about is playing good football and competing in a great conference.”

On Zac Lee:
“It’s a negative anytime you don’t get a chance to practice and gain reps. You’ve got to try to get better every time you step out on the football field. But right now he’s 100%, he’s competing well and he’s looking forward to a great fall.

Anytime you miss a significant amount of time it has an impact on you. You lose time to get better. At the age these kids are, and really any college football player, nodoby’s ever reached (their) potential so it’s not the ideal situation.”

On the not yet named starting QB and his role:
“We need the quarterback position to step up because, let’s face it, he’s at the center point, he’s the trigger guy. We are fortunate in that we do have some experience coming back at that position, we have two young men who are competing for the starting job with Zac Lee who had great springs, have a lot of talent, there very explosive athletes. Any time you have great competition at any position it’s going to make everybody better, it’s going to make our football team better…I’ve preached competition since I took over at Nebraska at each and every position and I think that quarterback position is just one where you’re going to see guys battling it out from day one.

On “THE VIDEO”:
“It was actually a mistake…(the marketing department) made the mistake of putting ‘Beat Texas’ on it. Be honest with you, I wasn’t really happy about it…I didn’t like the message it sent to our football team because that’s way down the road. We have a lot of things to do before we even consider Texas.”

On the QB decision:
“We equally rep our guys anyway. We’re in no hurry to make that decision. That’s going to be one that’s going to go up until at least the first game. I don’t know how that’s going to play out…I do know we have some very capable athletes at the quarterback position.”

And it’s here that the video feed from Big 12 Media Days vanished for a few minutes–conspiracy!?–but you get the gist. Excited about the team, unconcerned about Big 12 hostility and, like the rest of us, eagerly awaiting the QB race.

Even in light of the upheaval of early June it really was business as usual but media days do mean we’re that much closer to actual football.

I pray the NU fans don’t start calling out conspiracy w/ the web feed. Been fighting off trolls enough as it is. No need to add fuel to the fire. Knowing how Pelini and Co have always handled the media and their questions, I have no doubts about the lack of ink given to the press by anyone giving an interviews today.

With this first annual Hip Hop Weekly Swimsuit and Summer Fashion issue, we wanted to create our own lane. We came up with the swimsuit edition but we figured that we feature over 200 products relating to style in the magazine. So we kinda wanted to do two separate covers, the same magazine but with two different covers. One with Amber Rose that kinda represents style and the other one with that Sports Illustrated look with Tahiry.

Each cover has its own look. The one that Tahiry’s in, we had did the Peek-A-Book cover, we kinda coined that phrase where we’re showing her on the beach where the lifeguard is stationed then our art director kicked the door out and then the door sticks back on with the cover. It’s pretty dope.

Right now, this big 3-D revolution is taking over and the idea just came to me. It just came to me. I asked our art director if he could do the 3-D and he said he actually had to learn it himself with the software that enables you to do 3-D.

Dave Mays reached out to Amber Rose’s peoples. Her brother Antonio is really cool. So Dave reached out and they accepted. Of course it’s a business so people are compensated but she thought it would be real dope. Amber is on some high fashion type of thing. She doesn’t really want to be boxed in, she’s trying to take it to another level and I have a lot of respect for her because she knows exactly what she wants to do, how she wants to do it. It was a pleasure working with her, she’s really nice and she’s also really focused.

And with the world famous Tahiry, she’s also another focused person. Some of these girls are really focused on their careers and trying to take what they’re doing to a whole ‘nother level and I know they might get a bad rap sometimes but I can tell you first hand these girls are about their business.

The photo shoots took place at the Grand Beach Hotel in Miami and we did it at the National because when you shoot 3-D, you gotta have different objects in the forefront, in the back and front to get the perspective of everything. This issue is more of a photo-based thing. We really wanted to pay attention to the beauty. I think a lot of magazines just really want to emphasize the body, the a**, the chest, whatever. I don’t think that they really focus on the beauty of the face and that’s what we really wanted to bring out. We wanted to get some really good quality pictures across. We didn’t want to get nothing too sleazy. We wanted to keep it with class.

Real talk, this has all been overwhelming. Honestly. It’s just a matter of time before Hip Hop Weekly crosses that line to where you’ll be seeing the Hip Hop Weekly awards. It’s the same blueprint as The Source. We ain’t lost a step, we just had to get it back together. Having dropped this first annual issue, I think a lot more females are going to want to be involved with the next one so I think through the Internet and the magazine, I think we’ll be able to have a real good choice next time with even more women to choose from. There’s a lot of beautiful women out there, it’s just a matter of who’s gonna have that top cover spot?

I have always thought that picking out upscale office design is sort of an art. It is much more difficult than picking out dining room design or other home design. You see, most people don’t spend very long on any of the chairs in their house. They will sit down for a meal, hang out on the recliner in front of the TV for an hour, and that’s it. By contrast, you spend hours and hours in your office. A typical executive might be sitting still for 40 hours or more every week in his office desk chair.
The trouble with spending many hours sitting in the office is no one wants to give up elegance for comfort. It is fine to own ergonomic office design, but it also has to look professional. The upscale office design you buy, you see, expresses a lot about you. People make assumptions immediately when they enter your office. They will know whether you have modern or classical tastes, and infer things about your managerial style and your business principles from this. Even if it is more comfortable, you don’t want people to come into your office and see you sitting on a rubber ball or some other new fangled modern design!
On modern versus Classical design the best upscale office design should be fairly classic. It should be simple and elegant, not tacky and trendy. I have always loved leather design, and I firmly believe that it is the best choice. A comfortable, black leather chair conveys power, efficiency, and good taste.
It will also go well with any office desk that you choose. A lot of people think that normal office chairs are the rule, but they really aren’t. There is nothing that says that you are required to work in a swivel chair with wheels on the bottom. As a matter of fact, much of the best upscale office design is made without wheels. A solid chair with armrests will be more comfortable, more stable, and more durable.
In Summary and Conclusion the type of office you run should influence your choice in upscale office design. For example, if you spend most of your time at your desk, you might want to buy a chair without casters. If, however, you are always on the move or have several different workstations, a chair with rollers on the bottom will be a much better choice. Make sure that your choice in upscale office design reflects not just your tastes, but your needs as well. After all, good design is important if you want to run an efficient office.
