For some people, adding some improvements to a home is limitless. The budget can stretch forever, and there’s nothing that isn’t possible. And then there’s the rest of us. The truth is that even those with some money to spare on re-doing a kitchen or sprucing up a garden would often like to save as much as they spend. After all, money doesn’t grow on trees, and even when it comes to investing in your home, you don’t want to spend too much. Especially if it’s only to find out a couple of years down the line that the work you had done wasn’t even that great to begin with.
But not all home improvement tips have to cost too much, and not all of them have to be overly ambitious, either. Here are seven great tips for any budget, but especially those that are more realistic. And they’re not just food for saving money: they’re also great for making sure that your final product looks like what you’ve been imagining the whole time.
1. Shampoo your carpets. If you aren’t looking to spend a ton of money but want to do something that will brighten your household, then sometimes you don’t even need to add elements: you just need to clean the ones you already have. While vacuuming does a lot for carpets, a great shampoo will have them looking even cleaner in very little time. The cost of renting a shampooer and getting the right chemicals is certainly only a fraction of what it would take to replace carpets, and the difference will be noticeable in moments.
2. Always look towards lighting. Whether making the kitchen brighter or changing the feeling of your bedroom, sometimes all that it takes to improve your home is investing in a couple of lamps or changing the way that you use existing ones. Invest in dimmers and check out energy-saving bulbs to truly get the most of of your lighting experience.
3. Add some color. This is one of the easiest things to do in terms of home improvement choices, yet so many people don’t act on it. If you just add some color to your rooms, whether on the walls or through accessories, you will not just decorate better: you will feel invigorated. Just be sure to follow the handy 60/30/10 rule, which means your dominant color should take up 60 percent of the room, a secondary should take up 30, while a simple accent only gets ten.
4. Plant some flowers. Home improvement isn’t just limited to indoors. If you don’t have much of a green thumb, you can still figure out easy flowers to plant that will improve the look of your home. And putting some in window boxes make rooms themselves brighten up immediately.
5. Hang some curtains. For a boost of color if you don’t feel like ripping out entire chunks of carpet or re-painting the walls, you can just go with a curtain. And best of all, light and billowy materials mean that during the summertime, you get even more sunlight than with heavy drapes.
6. Fix the simple stuff. If your kitchen cabinets are a bit wobbly, a simple screwdriver can make the difference between something looking off-kilter and something that feels nicer. A fresh coat of paint where there has been a whole lot of scuffing because of furniture on a wall can also bright up your home quickly.
7. Spruce up the bathroom. You don’t have to completely re-do your bathroom to feel that it looks better immediately. While a big home improvement like new tile or a replaced sink might not be feasible for a do-it-yourselfer, simpler steps like purchasing a new toilet seat and throwing out your ratty towels in favor of something cleaner and fresher can make a big difference, too.
