The North Korean government released Aijalon Gomes, who had been imprisoned there since January. He was later met by former American President, Jimmy Carter, whom hugged him and boarded the plane to US. Carter had been to N. Korea this week to secure the pardon of the 31 year American who had been imprisoned on the charges of crossing into N.Korea from China.
N. Korea’s leader Kim Jong II had received the request from Carter, and forgave Gomes imprisonment sentence. Aijolon became the fourth American to be imprisoned in N. Korea this year, on the charges of trespassing in the country. N. Korea had fought a war against the Americans in 1950 – 53, since then N. Korea does not have any diplomatic relations with Washington.
There is no clear reason why Gomes trespassed into the country, but for now he has been sent home. He had been teaching English in the country of South Korea, but later was imprisoned for trespassing from the Chinese side. He had been fine 70 million won and a eight years of rigorous imprisonment for sneaking into N.Korea
