NHRA drag racer, Mark Niver, suffered a tragic death on Sunday, while he was racing at Pacific Raceways. The fatal accident took place when the braking parachutes ripped off, preventing him from avoiding a collision.

Mark Niver was 60 years old when he died; he had been racing for more than 40 years. Sunday, organizers did an improvised ceremony after the crash to award Niver’s family the prize in a very emotional moment.
The NHRA said via its website:
“NHRA and Pacific Raceways officials extend their deepest sympathies to the entire Niver family.”
“Niver was a racer’s racer. For most of his career, he not only drove but built his dragsters and machined his engines and components. His talent on the race track and in the machine shop was superseded only by his kindness and willingness to help other racers.”
This is the third fatal accident that is linked to the NHRA in this year. Last month another driver was killed, and in February, a fan was killed by a flying tire.
