Prepped And Ready: Miserable Morning at McCallum

By Danny Davis | Friday, September 3, 2010, 09:00 AM

I would not want to be a McCallum or Akins football player right now.

Due to a weather delay that lasted nearly two hours, the Knights and Eagles weren’t able to finish their game on Thursday until after midnight. You’ve got to figure that with postgame activities and the bus ride home from House Park, some of those kids probably didn’t get to bed until around 2 a.m. on Friday.

Let’s just hope that none of the McCallum or Akins teachers were going to hand out pop quizzes today.

After covering the Bastrop/Seguin game last night, I stopped by House Park to see the end of the McCallum game. I stayed until around 11:45 p.m… which marked the end of the third quarter.

So, like the players, I’m a bit tired this morning. But I’m a trooper so let’s blog.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE STATE

Former McNeil coach to honor late Kingsville High football player (via the Corpus Christi Caller).

Sidelined by an injury and an illness, two elite runners are ready to run (via the Dallas Morning News).

Volleyball coach nearing milestone win (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram).

Storied stadium stirs up controversy in San Antonio (via the San Antonio Express-News).

THURSDAY NIGHT RECAP

Bastrop 51 Seguin 21: Josiah Monroe’s touchdown-a-thon gets Bastrop back to its winning ways.

McCallum 60 Akins 43: Knights overcome weather and D’Auuhndre Raindle en route to the team’s first victory of the season.

BASTROP’S BACK

A few more words on the Bastrop win.

Last night’s win shouldn’t have been a surprise. Bastrop, after all, is District 25-5A’s defending champion and the Bears were ranked ninth in our preseason power poll.

But after last week’s loss to McNeil, it was possible to think that the Bears, who returned only two all-district players, might not have been as good as we thought they were. A loss to Seguin would have all but slapped an “overrated” label across the jersey of every Bastrop player.

But Bastrop played great on Thursday, using its speed to blow by a rebuilding Seguin team that had won its season opener. Josiah Monroe accounted for six touchdowns but the Bears did a a good job of spreading the wealth – Monroe’s five touchdown passes were hauled in by four different receivers and Monroe, Marcus Reed and Mark Jackson combined for 174 rushing yards on 26 carries.

“It’s not a one-man show,” Bastrop coach Gerald Perry said after the game.

Bastrop still has issues – five of the six touchdowns allowed by Bastrop this season have been rushing scores – but Thursday’s win made it clear that the Bears will be contending for a district title this season.

FRIDAY NIGHT BREAKDOWN

Dripping Springs v. Wimberley

Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Last week, Jeff Tuck celebrated his third year on the Tigers’ varsity team with a four-touchdown performance against Crockett. Not to be outdone, Aledo transfer Brady Lambert accounted for four touchdowns in his first game in a Wimberley uniform.

Crockett had a tough time tackling Omar Pereyra last week as the junior running back averaged 6.8 yards a carry. Wimberley has numerous weapons on offense, none more scary than Texas A&M-bound running back Dennis Smith.

Dripping Springs opened the season with its first shutout since last year’s 24-0 win over Wimberley. Wimberley returned seven defensive starters this year but the Texans still gave up 42 points in its season-opening win over Cuero.

Dripping Springs got two 30-yard field goals from Paden Williams last week. Wimberley will be led on special teams by Brennen Blakemore, who had a punt return touchdown last year against Ingram Moore.

Dripping Springs has won three straight games over the Texans and a fourth straight victory would help the Tigers match their win total from last year. Wimberley’s season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start: Wimberley ended Cuero’s 33-game home winning streak last week and was named the Army Strong Team of the Week for the 3A classification.

CHAT RECAP

Every Thursday at 1 p.m., we host a high school football chat on the Varsity News blog. Here are some of the highlights from this week’s chat:

Since Lake Travis struggled in its season-opening victory over Westlake, we asked the chatters who they thought would beat Lake Travis this season. Fifty-three percent of the voters thought that Lake Travis wouldn’t lose this fall while Kerrville Tivy (18%), Aledo (12%), Cedar Park (12%) and the somebody else option (6%) all got votes. We asked the same question two weeks ago and only 33 percent of the voters thought that Lake Travis wouldn’t lose a game this season (20 percent of the voters in that poll thought that Westlake would knock off the Cavs).

We asked the voters which team had the most disappointing season-opening loss. Thirty-seven percent of the vote went to Bastrop, which lost a 22-20 game to McNeil. Bastrop’s dominance on Thursday night showed why people were so shocked by last week’s struggles.

While the voters were disappointed by Bastrop, not a lot of people seemed overly concerned about McCallum’s loss to Anderson last week. Eighty-three percent of the voters expect the Knights to win the District 26-4A crown. Travis got the remaining 17 percent of the vote while LBJ and Crockett were shutout by the chatters.

We also got into a spirited discussion about the recent 7-on-7 controversy going on in the Dallas area.

Poll-wise, we asked if coaches should be banned from coaching 7-on-7 drills or allowed to coach. An overwhelming 80 percent of the voters thought that the coaches should be allowed to coach while 20 percent thought that the head honchos should be banned.

I really don’t think this topic is worth an investigative report but if the goal was to get ratings then point, WFAA-TV. I’ll keep my opinion on the matter short and if you want a more in-depth opinion piece, I suggest this column by the Dallas Morning News’ Matt Wixon.

If the UIL doesn’t want coaches coaching in the summer, they shouldn’t let them attend the games. Eliminate the grey areas and either ban the coaches completely or let them be fully involved. It’s that simple.

HIGH SCHOOL FANTASY FOOTBALL

This season, we will be playing a high school fantasy football game. We will be using a standard scoring system but instead of Peyton Manning or Brett Favre, we will be debating each week on whether to start Lake Travis’ Michael Brewer or Belton’s David Ash.

Each week, we will draft a quarterback, a running back, a wide receiver and a defense. There is no exclusive ownership of players but each quarterback can only be used twice. Running backs, wide receivers and defenses can only be used once.

We will publish our weekly line-ups in the Friday column and our season scores can be found in the parentheses following each participant’s name and affiliation. Be sure to check back with us throughout the season to see how we’re doing.

Here is what our Week 1 line-ups look like:

DeVon Odems, LBJ fan (67 points): Westlake QB Lewis Guilbeau, McCallum RB Michael Sorrells, LBJ WR John Kavanaugh, Stony Point defense

Michael Adams, Bastrop Advertiser (52 points): Elgin QB Dylan Scott, Copperas Cove RB William Randolph, Vista Ridge WR Jaylen Harris, Elgin defense

Max Thompson, Lake Travis View (39 points): Killeen QB Michael Cummings, McCallum RB Michael Sorrells, Killeen WR Cameron Fleming, Lago Vista defense

Rick Cantu, Austin American-Statesman (38 points): Austin High QB Jordan Jaquez, Giddings RB Eric Rimes, Lake Travis WR Griffin Gilbert, St. Michael’s defense

Thomas Jones, Westlake Picayune (34 points): Belton QB David Ash, Regents RB Walker Netherton, Austin High WR Cayleb Jones, St. Michael’s defense

Danny Davis, Austin American-Statesman (23 points): Lake Travis QB Michael Brewer, Copperas Cove RB William Randolph, Lake Travis WR Griffin Gilbert, Cedar Park defense

And that’s the end of this story. Have a fun Friday and I’ll see you on Monday morning.

Joe, you must not have read the entire blog post. The McCallum score is clearly listed in the “Thursday Night Recap” section.

Why does the Statesman not print the McCallum football team scores?

No score was posted Friday or Saturday for the McCallum game. You did not mention the score on your blog. I understand Austin has many High schools in the area which makes it difficult to cover all the games in depth.

The least the paper can do is print scores for all teams.

Earlier Tuesday we wrote about the Google homepage illustration (or “doodle,” as Google calls these things) that’s sparked so many Google searches it popped up in Google Trends. By late morning, variations of “Google balls,” “Google logo” and “Google dots” took up five spots on Google Trends’ top searches.

The search the floating, size-changing, swooping balls that make up the word “Google” on the search page – is still popular Tuesday evening, and Google itself is mostly mum on the doodle’s meaning, but the following tweet appeared on Google’s official Twitter page by mid-afternoon: “Boisterous doodle today. Maybe it’s excited about the week ahead…”

Thanks, Google. Way to torture your users even more.

Of course, “torture” is too strong a word. After all, we’re only talking about dots that look like the plastic colored balls that kids jump into at an amusement park.

But what does that cryptic tweet mean? One thing’s for sure: The logo has nothing to do the company’s birthday, according to this post on searchengineland.com. (Google’s official birthday is Sept. 27.)

The domain name google.com was registered on Sept. 15, 1997. Perhaps the tweet is a reference to the registration. Perhaps next week we’ll all be a little wiser when it comes to “Google balls.”

But the most popular theory seems to be that the logo is a reference to Google’s September 8 search event. Last week the company sent out the invites:

So what’s the story? Maybe Google will tell us all Wednesday. And hopefully the answer is as at least as fascinating as Tuesday’s doodle.

Google Logo September 7 on Google Homepage Today: What’s the Message? – Although it is not being used in all of Google’s sites worldwide, people are surprised to see the Google Logo today, September 7, 2010 on Google Homepage. Apparently, it once again an interactive Google Doodle just like the recent Google Doodles on Pacman and the most recent Buckyball.

People are searching everywhere and trying to decode the Google Logo hidden message on Google’s homepage. The truth however is that it is just an ordinary Google Doodle and there is no hidden message to it as it’s not clickable as compared to the previous Google Logos.

Most probably, it was created to celebrate the anniversary of Google this September or it was a technical error on the part of Google. However, judging from the length the Google Logo had been on the Google homepage, it cannot be considered as a technical problem.

We have posted an article before and many had confirmed that they have seen the Google Balls on Google Logo today, September 7. Most of the people who saw it were also surprised and said that they had fun with the latest Google Doodle Logo.

Google had been reached for interview by the Associated Press and it seems that they are prolonging the puzzle and speculations about the Google Logo displayed for September 7.

“Today’s doodle is fast, fun and interactive, just the way we think search should be,” a spokesperson from Google told the Daily News.

So is there a Google logo hidden message?

“We’ll leave it at that,” the spokesperson said.

There might not be a Google Logo hidden message but for sure Google is up to something and is testing our reaction on the Google Doodle on the Google homepage.

Check out the longer Google Logo September 7 video on Google Homepage below:

SAN ANTONIO — A Texas woman’s lawyer says a French court has granted her custody of her 11-year-old son who disappeared last year after being removed from a school bus in San Antonio.

Attorney Miguel Ortiz told KSAT-TV that the court Friday granted custody to Berenice Diaz. She and her ex-spouse, Jean Philippe Lacombe, who is from France, were in court Thursday in Marseille.

Ortiz says paperwork was being completed to return the boy, Jean Paul Lacombe, to his mother.

Law officers last October removed the boy from the school bus after the father allegedly used incomplete Mexican court documents to falsely claim he had custody.

The father faces Texas charges of kidnapping, aggravated perjury and interfering with child custody. Further details on the criminal case were not immediately available.

Business booming, local shows launching in San Antonio

By Michael Malone — Broadcasting & Cable, 9/6/2010 12:01:00 AM

San Antonio’s New ‘Mobile’ News

What do the rookie newscasts on KENS and WOAI have in common, besides a rapid pace and high story count? Both programs will feature anchors up on their feet—and on the go.

“It’s faster-paced, with anchors on the move,” says KENS Executive News Director Kurt Davis of First at 4PM, which launched Aug. 2 and features anchors Deborah Knapp and Bill Taylor on the set.

WOAI Assistant News Director Mandy Johnston Mendoza says the 6:30 p.m. anchors, Randy Beamer and Elsa Ramon, will also burn a few calories during the show, which debuts Sept. 6. “The anchors rarely, if ever, sit down at the desk,” she says.

The moving-anchors motif is not a new one: WTVJ Miami, for one, was doing it more than a decade ago. Consultants say it’s popular in late afternoon, as viewers transition from the more open and fl uid nature of a talk show to the staid setup of early evening news. A few notes of caution: Walking while talking can be challenging at times, and the anchor has to have an actual destination on the set—a touch wall, another anchor—so as to avoid what TV insiders call the dreaded “walk to nowhere.”

“I think people are doing anything they can to make the news look and feel new,” says Crawford Johnson & Northcott Senior Communications Consultant Laura Hernandez, “and to make it more urgent and more relevant.”
—Michael Malone

With summer coming to a close and the temperature slipping back to the double digits, San Antonio stations are poised to launch new programs. KENS kicked off a 4 p.m. newscast Aug. 2, while WOAI debuts a 6:30 p.m. show Sept. 6. Yet leader KSAT is mostly sticking to its guns, outside of slotting Nate Berkus in place of Rachael Ray, which goes to WOAI at 9 a.m. “There’s very little change here this year,” concedes VP/General Manager Jim Joslyn.

There apparently doesn’t need to be. Consistency is a hallmark at KSAT, an ABC affiliate owned by Post- Newsweek. Joslyn has around 18 years at the station, and News Director Jim Boyle has logged 26. Joslyn says KSAT thrives by intently listening to viewers, whether it’s via e-mailed comments or at community events, such as station-hosted town halls. “The idea of getting into the community to talk to viewers is a big part of our success,” Joslyn says. “We know what they look like, and how they think.”

The numbers prove Joslyn’s point. KSAT swept the major races in May, with the top morning, early evening and late news ratings, along with the primetime and total day races. KSAT posted a 10.4 household rating/16 share at 10 p.m.—topping CBS affiliate KENS’ 7.9 rating/12 share. (Belo’s KENS did win the 5 a.m. news contest.) KSAT also won a close 2009 revenue race, its $ 37.9 million topping KENS’ $ 35.2 million, according to BIA/ Kelsey. Other players in San Antonio’s broadcast universe include Sinclair’s Fox-MyNetworkTV duopoly KABB and KMYS, Newport TV/High Plains Broadcasting’s NBC affiliate WOAI and Corridor TV’s CW affiliate KCWX.

San Antonio is also the nation’s eighth-largest Hispanic market; 53.5% of the population is of Hispanic origin, says BIA/Kelsey. Spanish-language options are vast; they include Univision’s KWEX, Telemundo’s KVDA and Una Vez Mas’ Azteca America outlet KVDF; KSAT airs LATV on its digital channel. KWEX’s Noticias 41 crew delivers strong ratings in evening and late news. Univision also owns the TeleFutura outlet KNIC and six local radio stations.

San Antonio’s major pay-TV operators are Time Warner Cable and AT&T’s U-verse service.

While it holds the No. 37 DMA rank, San Antonio is the No. 24 revenue market, reports BIA. Major employers include insurance outfit USAA, the military (Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base and Randolph Air Force Base are among the local installations), and Toyota. The latter recently started production of its Tacoma truck out of San Antonio, which added around a thousand jobs to the market. San Antonio has manufactured Toyota’s full-size Tundra truck for several years.

“San Antonio has fared better than most cities,” says KENS Executive News Director Kurt Davis. “There’s a lot of construction going on—San Antonio is growing.”

Tourists choose San Antonio for a less expensive vacation option and attractions such as the River Walk and the historic Alamo. The diversity of the local economy, and the stable job sources, keep the area insulated from prolonged economic slumps. “I wouldn’t say the economy is great, but it is good,” Joslyn says. “The market has not been as vibrant, but it’s in awful good shape.”

The growth includes local TV. KENS has bumped Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? from the 4 p.m. slot for the fledgling newscast, which Davis says has an even higher story count than the newsroom’s usual rapid-fire output. “We’re starting to see significant growth in household ratings,” he points out. “It’s a high-energy newscast with lots of local stuff. It’s what’s happening right now.”

WOAI’s 6:30 news will stick with the station’s advocacy brand—callers to the station are greeted with WOAI’s “Dedicated. Determined. Dependable.” tagline—and feature a fast pace as well. “What sets us apart is the advocacy role we take in the market,” says VP/General Manager Jackie Rutledge, mentioning one recent investigative series that prompted San Antonio’s public bus system to outlaw text messaging among drivers.

Fox affiliate KABB, meanwhile, offers four hours of news in the morning, along with an hour at 9 p.m. The station provides news on the go with new iPhone and Droid apps.

Much like the general managers at most Oprah Winfrey stations, Joslyn is mum on what KSAT will do when Oprah departs broadcast TV next year. “We don’t know yet,” he says. “We’re looking at four or five different things.”

Crime is a big issue in San Antonio, and the newsrooms make an effort to keep it from dominating the news rundown. “It’s an excellent news town,” Davis says. “Unfortunately, the crime stories get a lot of attention, but there’s always something going on in San Antonio.”

The media must not have seen much New Mexico football in recent years. Frankly, who has?

The Lobos went 1-11 last season and were able to generate all of 107 yards of total offense against Oregon.

Meanwhile, the Ducks racked up more than 700 yards of offense and won 72-0.

Apparently, this performance was enough to vault Oregon from No. 11 in the preseason AP Poll all the way to No. 7. More importantly, the Ducks passed Iowa, who registered a 37-7 win, and Florida, who beat Miami of Ohio 34-12 and was ranked fourth in the preseason poll.

It’s difficult to justify dropping the Gators four spots after a win over a legitimate FBS team, something New Mexico simply isn’t at this point.

The only possible explanation for Oregon’s rise is that the AP voters were impressed by style points.

Federal regulators are putting off efforts to regain authority over the nation’s internet providers while they seek renewed public input on net neutrality.

The delay shows the intractability of the debate over wireless and wireline openness rules, and the ongoing shock waves of last month’s joint policy proposal from Google and Verizon to create a framework for Congress to enact new competitive rules for ISPs. That proposal in turn seeks to fill a vacuum left by a federal appeals court, which effectively stripped the FCC of its authority to oversee broadband earlier this year.

The delicacy of the negotiations to reassert federal control of the internet were made clear on Wednesday when the FCC announced that, due to unnamed recent events — a clear reference to its failed talks and Google and Verizon’s recent policy “compromise” statement — it needs even more comments on “what framework will guarantee Internet freedom and openness, and maximize private investment and innovation.”

Specifically, the FCC wants feedback on whether ISPs should be allowed to build special web services for their own customers (.pdf), or if they should be prevented from competing directly with companies that create services for the general internet and thus depend on unbiased service from network providers.

At stake is an arcane administrative ruling issued during the Bush administration that reclassified internet providers as “information services” rather than “telecommunications services.” The FCC is specifically authorized to regulate only the latter. Now anti-regulatory factions, which naturally include the giant telecom monopolies that control the fixed and wireless broadband markets in the U.S., are fighting tooth and nail to keep the distinction intact, and the FCC off their turf.

Until the FCC finds a way through the thicket, there is still no federal authority that can prevent your ISP from dictating what browser you use, what brand of mobile phone computer or router you plug into the network or blocking your favorite website or protocol.

Your ISP and mobile phone company can make their services go faster than their competitors without fear of federal regulators fining them, and they can throttle your connection at any time, for any reason, without having to explain to anyone why they did it.

Free market groups argue that’s fine, since the market is competitive enough that ISPs will have to play fair with their customers. Others argue that the very basis of the internet is a transport layer that simply works, tries its best and doesn’t play favorites, and letting large telecoms muck with that puts all the innovation of the last two decades and those of the decades to come at risk.

Google and Verizon had long been at opposite ends of the net neutrality debate. Google, which makes its money on the web, wants the government to ensure that people have the right to use whatever services, devices and applications they want, and that wireless and traditional wired ISPs should be required to act as disinterested conduits — simply ferrying packets back and forth. Innovation, according to Google and many net neutrality supporters, happens in the development of applications and services, not in the network itself, regardless of whether that network is cable or 3G.

But telecoms including Verizon, the nation’s largest wireless company and one of its biggest fixed broadband companies, protest that such rules would be heavy-handed, reduce innovation and throttle investment in new infrastructure, especially in the wireless world.

Making good on an Obama campaign promise, the FCC announced last fall that it was going to formally adopt six broad principles of so-called net neutrality. The first four had been established informally in 2005 for cable and DSL customers: People would have the right to use whatever legal online services, devices and applications they wanted, and Americans would have the right to choose service providers from among various competing ISPs.

FCC head Julius Genachowski, a law school classmate of President Obama, wanted to add two more rules: One, broadband providers cannot discriminate against services or applications by slowing them down, and two, broadband providers must tell customers how its engineers manage the network congestion.

The FCC also wanted apply some of the rules to the growing mobile broadband industry, something that Skype and Google had been fighting for. That fight included a $ 4.6 billion bet by Google that forced Verizon to buy wireless spectrum with open access rules applied to it. (The FCC has never ruled one way or the other if the original rules applied to wireless.)

I’ve posted quite a few pictures from NASA’s Earth-observing Terra satellite over the past few months, some of them showing devastating natural disasters. But I never thought I’d post one that shows something so close to home.

This image was taken yesterday, September 6th, at about noon Mountain time:

That shows the plume of smoke from the Fourmile Canyon fire that I wrote about yesterday. The image is roughly 300 km (190 miles) across. The vertical dividing line is the actual edge of the Rocky Mountains; to the left (west) are the mountains, and to the right (east) is the start of the Great Plains stretching most of the way across the US.

The green smudge just to the south of the plume is Denver, and the smoke goes directly over Boulder… and my house. The fire is still going as I write this, but the winds have shifted and there is no longer a plume overhead. It smells like ash outside though, and the foothills — usually visible a few kilometers to the west from my house — are almost totally hidden.

I appreciate all the notes and tweets I’ve gotten, but we’re safe here. The fire is pretty far west of us, though we could see it poking over the first set of foothills last night. Creepy.

My brother-in-law has taken some amazing pictures of the fire from his house, located even farther to the east than where I am. This one shows the tops of the fires.

I’ll add that the sunset yesterday was desperately beautiful:

The smoke is made up of tiny particles of soot and ash. When blue light hits them, it scatters like a pinball off a bumper. So when you look to the Sun through the smoke, all the blue light has bounced off in a different direction, leaving only the redder light able to make its way straight to your eye. This happens on a lesser scale every night with particles in the air, making sunsets red. But this fire has really strengthened the effect, and the Sun went through myriad shades of red on its way down past the mountains last night. It was astonishing. Making it even more wrenching was knowing what was a causing it, and that there were people in the middle of all that smoke trying to put the fires out.

So far, there are still no reported injuries, though many homes have been destroyed and over 1000 people have been evacuated from the area.

My thanks to NASA_GoddardPix for the link to the Terra picture.

KBTX has one more MDA Telethon under our belts, and this year’s event was a huge success.

It was an outpouring of support Monday as residents across the Brazos Valley opened up their pocket books to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy.

And it’s an event that’s helping people not only across the country but right here at home.

“I just want to find a cure for this disease and every little amount counts,” said Norilee Tomchesson of Bryan.

Tomchesson has been battling primary lateral sclerosis for the last five years.

“There’s no amount too small,” she said during Monday’s telethon.

On Labor Day her whole family was rallying behind her to raise money at the KBTX 38th annual MDA Telethon in College Station.

“PLS is one of the adult muscular dystrophy diseases and it’s I think the term they like to use is treatable but not curable at this point,” said Mike Tomchesson, Norilee’s husband.

Mike Tomchesson helped man the phone lines Monday as hundreds of people called in pledging donations to help MDA find a cure.

“It’s so much fun I hate it’s for such a serious purpose because it really is a lot of fun,” he said.

“And so we really really rely on people in the community to provide things like our summer camp, our research our services our clinics, our support groups it really comes from the people, the community,” said MDA Executive Director Jennifer Carrisal.

Carrisal said locally the organization serves hundreds of families in the Brazos Valley and millions nationally.

“What I love most about especially the College Station, Bryan area is just that the community is so giving here and every year we come back and the donations just keep getting more generous,” Carrisal said.

A generosity that will hopefully not be needed one day, when cures for muscular dystrophy are found.

“I just want to walk again,” said Norilee Tomchesson to which Mike Tomchesson replied, “We’ll get there, we’ll get there.”

At the end of the day Brazos Valley viewers donated $ 168,793.85 for MDA which is $ 14,000 more than what was raised at the Telethon last year.

The Telethon raised a total of $ 58.9 million nationwide.

EPPICard is just like a bank account that is used for child support payments. The card looks like an ATM card.

Most of the time EPPICard charges some fees to claim unemployment benefits, though these charges are not supposed to be charged.

Fayetteville Observer reported on June 20 that administration fees plague the non-working people who can ill afford to pay. It is not in fact a payment easing method, but it has become a payment harder and taxing more to those who are claiming the benefits.

According to several media, the EPPICard program failed to go off. Moreover, the customer service calls are also chargeable. Currently, the EPPICard cash payday system is used in ninteen states. Most of the states are facing problem using it.
