Egg Recall List Growing – An outbreak of eggs that are tainted with salmonella has prompted a nationwide recall and has caused several hospitalizations in states across the US. The most prominent outbreak took place in Santa Clara County. Since the beginning of May, at least 38 people in the county, and 266 people across the state have fallen ill after eating the eggs that are contaminated.
“Salmonella enteritidis is one of the top three common strains of salmonella. Quite a lot of Salmonella enteritidis is associated with eggs,” said Dr. Sara Cody, deputy health officer of the Public Health Department in the county.
The company that distributed the eggs is located in Iowa, and they issued their recall for the eggs on Friday. Brands that have been recalled include Lucerne, Albertsons, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.
The eggs were served in restaurants and at other events as well as being sold in grocery stores. Common symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, cramps, nausea and vomiting. The side effects will begin to appear anywhere from 12 to 72 hours after you have eaten the foods.

“Don’t eat raw eggs. There is always a chance that an egg could be contaminated with salmonella,” Cody said. She also advised individuals to ensure that the eggs that they purchase and eat are cooked thoroughly to avoid eating contaminated eggs. The strain of salmonella that has been infecting people is not airborne, and is acquired solely through the consumption of contaminated foods.
