One of the most controversial stories of the week has already reached a conclusion. After an incident on her radio show in which she lashed out at a woman in an interracial marriage for being too sensitive (and went on to try and “prove her point” by using some incredibly offensive language), Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced on “Larry King Live” that she will not renew her contract to return to radio next year.
This move is no surprise considering the backlash Dr. Laura has received from the African-American community and other organizations for her use of the “n word” — however, the supposed motive behind her decision is sure to raise some eyebrows:
”My First Amendment rights have been usurped by angry, hateful groups who don’t want to debate — they want to eliminate … I decided it was time to move on to other venues where I could say my peace and not have to live in fear anymore.”
Dr. Laura may be right in that we have the right to free speech, but this also means that everyone else has the right to criticize her when she says something offensive. Therefore, the idea of her being a victim in this case cannot come across as believable.
Do you think that Dr. Laura damaged her reputation even further on “Larry King”?
