Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant knew there’d be payback for having refused to do the rookie rite of carrying teammates’ shoulder pads during training camp. The check came due this week at the traditional rookie-picks-up-the-tab dinner.
The damage: $ 54,896.
The meal was supposed to be only for offensive players, but more than 20 guys showed up at a steakhouse – and brought their appetites, said Bryant’s adviser, David Wells.
“People had goooood meals,” Wells said, laughing. “If you’d never had lobster before, you had it that night.”
Steaks, fish and plenty of beverages made for a fun evening, albeit at a high price. Then again, Bryant is making $ 2.8 million this season so he can afford it.
“Dez knew what he had to do and he took responsibility for it,” said Wells, who wasn’t there but saw the bill. “He made the best of it, nothing negative. He had a good time with the guys, bonding with his teammates.”
l RAVENS: Baltimore waived defensive end Trevor Pryce, though Coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday it’s likely the team will soon re-sign the 14-year veteran. The move makes room for safety Ken Hamlin, who was released by Baltimore last week.
Meanwhile, running back Ray Rice missed practice because of a bruised right knee.
l JAGUA RS: Wide receiver Kassim Osgood leapt out a second-floor window to escape a gun-wielding man who attacked him and a 19-year-old Jacksonville cheerleader, according to police.
The armed intruder exchanged gunfire with his ex-girlfriend, Mackenzie Rae Putnal, after putting a gun to her head Monday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff’s report, Osgood, 30, suffered some minor bruises during the attack and while fleeing.
Meanwhile, former Buffalo starting quarterback Trent Edwards signed with the Jaguars.
l JETS: All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis (strained left hamstring) did not practice, spending part of the session on a stationary bike and also working with a trainer on the side. His availability for this week remains uncertain.
l CARDINALS: Wide receiver Steve Breaston will miss at least one game after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
l RAMS: Running back Steven Jackson said on his Twitter feed his groin strain was feeling better after acupuncture treatment, but he’s not yet ready to practice.
l LIONS: Quarterback Shaun Hill will start again Sunday at Green Bay while Matthew Stafford recovers from a shoulder injury.
l TITANS: Starting cornerback Jason McCourty missed practice as he recovers from surgery on his broken right forearm, an injury that will keep him out at least Sunday against Denver.
