You can probably think of a home improvement project for any season when you live in Vermont, but the fact is that some things should always be on tap. Whether it’s hot or cold outside, for example, the way you have insulated your home will add to or subtract from your comfort level. The same goes for energy draining appliances and other ‘all season’ issues. Try one of these five home improvement ideas when you want to take your place in Vermont to the next level.
1. Landscaping: You might not have the most open home in the neighborhood, which is perfectly fine, but you might as well take your improvement projects to the exterior in that case. Work on the landscaping and make your home look like a castle, even if you have let a few things slip inside. After all, if you’re not having the neighbors over for dinner, who would ever guess?
2. HVAC overhauls. People will often scrutinize things around the house when they notice that their energy bills have gotten a little out of control. You might want to check on your heating and cooling system first if that is the case, as inefficiency in this department is always going to come back to haunt you. It simply takes too much energy to run these poorly designed, older systems. Try changing your filters all you want, but you’re going to need to replace your system to see real changes.
3. Insulation. As alluded to above, if your home is poorly insulated, you are going to be facing cooler winters and warmer summers, power of your HVAC system notwithstanding. All of that precious, controlled air flow is slipping right through the cracks of a poorly insulated home. Experts usually point to the attic of different homes as a prime trouble spot, so start there and take the rest of your game to the windows and doors below.
4. Kitchen cabinets and countertops. If you look over your kitchen and see ugly, old cabinets and cracked or splintered countertops, you know what you have to do. Families spend too much time in this room to pretend like it can be looked past, especially in the winter months. If you are considering selling your home in the near future, these two items are an absolute must.
5. Bathroom tiles and fixtures. If you have tiled floors or showers in your bathroom, you realize how quickly it can go from looking terrific to looking horrid. It’s often the difference between all the tiles being together and a few of them getting cracked as the result of wear or some accident. If you haven’t prepared for such an occurrence, find a suitable match and wing it. As for fixtures, you have to realize how effective they can be at turning the bathroom from drab to sparkling instantly.
